Why Train Legs?

I’m amazed that nobody has mentioned this yet:

Extension of the hip joint is the most important functional movement there is.

Stop for a moment and think about it, if you need to…

This is why women check out men’s asses.

Train your hip extensors for power, speed and endurance – it will GREATLY improve your quality of life

The stuff about core strength is right, too, of course.

But I think the best reason to train legs is that it’s hard. You’re not just training your muscles in the gym, you’re training your ability to self-motivate. I might go to failure on an upper body exercise, but I never get that little voice in my head telling me to give up. Training legs, he shows up all the time. Training legs, I’ve learned how to ignore him, how to shut him up.

Training legs makes you a better person, IMO.

But, really, the sex thing is the most important…[/quote]

Does that mean that all those metros doing quarter squats are being functional?

5 years ago I decided to start training my legs properly. It didn’t take long for my whole body shape to change - my core tightend up, my glutes became stronger and my BF went down.

Why? The Squat is the big exercise, there is not another movement that puts more demands on the body. When I’m asked to justify training legs (primrily the Squat) i always respond ‘you will never fully achieve your potential if you don;t train your legs’.

SO you want a big chest? in that case start squating!!!

And look, I know we all hate men’s health and shouldn’t be using any of their information, but I think their covers are a good indicator of what sort of body is valued in our society.

This is a very sad statement. Are you seriously basing your training on what “society” thinks?

There was a good quote by Charles Staley posted recently in the “Strong Words” that said something like “Find out what the majority does, then do the opposite.” If the “majority” of society does not value training your legs, then you should train your legs.

Exactly right, well developed legs are rare and thus have a high value placed upon them; having them immediately sets you apart from a very large portion of lifters.
