I really don’t think this is complex, team. Being a “bodybuilder” is an important part of his self-identity. He doesn’t want to compete again (and most of us can’t blame him for that), but he”needs” to be a bodybuilder… therefore he also needs competition not to define the athlete.
He doesn’t care about powerlifting nor, really, any of these collateral semantics; he just can’t let (to himself) lack of competition take away the identify.
