Why the mantra "get stronger to get bigger" is bad advice and how strength training infiltrated bodybuilding

I want to compete in powerlifting. Which powerlifting meet is legitimate and which one is not? I want to compete in the legitimate one to finally be considered a powerlifter.

Wow! It is clear you are way out of your lane.

Judged Powerlifting meets are in place to assure the lifts meet an assigned standard. In other words your gym “sky” squat will likely be red lighted. But going extra deep gets you no extra credit. There is an agreed depth that a squats must at least descend to be considered a legal lift. Supposed the judges are there to assure equal treatment of all competitors. There hopefully lies equitable judging.

If you follow the rules of a federation you chose and are being judged accordingly it’s legitimate.

Quite objective for me.

That’s an appeal to authority. Judges from other powerlifting meets have other standards.

Which set of judges are legitimate?

There’s over 30 different powerlifting federations with differing rules. Which one must I join to finally be a powerlifter?

I find it amusing that you disregard only objective way to define a powerlifter as unobjective.

Training methodology is 100% objective.

Do you mean federation? Each is legitimate within themselves.

Any of them. But if you’re going to a federation which has practically no rules, you can be sure your results aren’t compared to IPF standards for example.

So you define yourself as a powerlifter based on joining a federation that has decided by itself that it is legitimate? That’s pretty limiting. Don’t you have any faith in your training methodology?

But if we say that only those who compete are powerlifters, then why can’t we say that only the IPF is legitimate? At least let’s be consistent in our gatekeeping

How do you feel about the judges who were on the judging panel on the singular bodybuilding contest you entered?

Was that set of judges legitimate?

Maybe that is why your first bodybuilding contest is your last bodybuilding contest.

What has this to do with training methology. You can train similarly and compete in all federations by their rules if you want.

It was my last bodybuilding contest because I saw how silly it was choosing to be limited by a certain set of judges. I don’t need external validation to know I’m a bodybuilder when I busted my ass using bodybuilding methodology to get there. I have faith in my methodology.

Some do. And I would like to see only 1-2 big federations (same rules, but tested and untested). It would make the comparing easier.

Not that any of the feds are less legit than other. Just don’t compare results done in them.

That comes as no surprise to any of us.

I don’t know about you guys but lifting to me whether it’s powerlifting or bodybuilding is a lot more fulfilling when it comes from within. Not from a set of judges. I didn’t have to first compete in bodybuilding to tell myself I’m a bodybuilder

Because your approach is based on external validation and mine is not.

I think it’s good that words mean something.

Referring to your vague methodology would make terms bodybuilder and powerlifter somewhat useless.

Methodology isn’t vague at all though, it’s very objective. My argument is that methodology is more accurate in defining who is a powerlifter and who isn’t rather than a set of judges. Maybe methodology is vague to you because you don’t have a lot of faith in it. You need others to tell you “this is an official powerlifting competition” in order for you to finally think you are a powerlifter.
