No matter what fixes are attempted, it seems like every internet forum is destined to end up cluttered, redundant and silly. It’s just the nature of the beast.
At my age I don’t see much new stuff in almost anything. PSU football scout forum, Joe must go, we need more recruits, etc. It the same stuff all the time.
T-Nation or any other weight site is the same way. It’s not there is much new to talk about. young people now tend to listen less than they did a generation ago and I think the net has something to do with it. Instead of learning weight lessons the hard way and lifting, they have a tell me everything now but don’t want to listen.
Back in the day, when the big guy offered a little advice, you would tend to listen. Hell, you were half surprised he even talked to you.
Now with the net, it’s just the nature of the beast that silliness will escalate much quicker. But eventually creating a new forum will tend to fail.
Nothing lasts forever. Good posters will move away and do other things. I was probably one of the top ten posters in volume in the early 2000s. I left the forum in 02 and just in the last year or so starting posting more. It happens. People do different things and so on.
There are posters such as JaredNFS, Jim McDonald, Jessie Burdick and others that spent a lot of time on this board, that either don’t post anymore or do very rarely.
Jim works at at Supertraining with Mark Bell, so why shoudl eh waste much time on the net? Most of his lifting needs can be met there.
It’s not meant to be a put down, but people often have other things to do. I used to post as irondoc. I got the handle from ART Ironman work. They used to call us the irondocs at the triathlons. with my interests in the weights, it was a natural screen name.
but as I got busier with other stuff my internet posting decreased. I’m remarried, have two kids of my own. I lift with my son, take my son and daughter shooting, take them hunting and so on. It’s just busier than when I was recently divorced.
That’s my story, but ti’s a familiar one that happens with forums. they just have their ups and downs. Believe it or not, but without some of the idiots posting and other nonsense it can get boring. It might seem nice at first to have a more restricted forum, but pretty soon there’s not much to talk about.
Here’s an example of maybe something new. A year ago or so I read about Louie Simmons hanging kettlebells from the bench bar to work on stability. I tried it yesterday and it seemed pretty interesting. I was crushed on a 2 board at first by 225 + a 25 each side hanging from mini. I did a rep right after that, then my nest set did 2225 + the 2 for an easy but hard set of six. the bouncing 25 does force you to stay tight.
I’m going to do these for a few weeks and retest my max. I used a doubled mini band btw. That would be four strands of band through the hole in the plate. Just doing some extra wrapping on the bands seemed to be a little to bouncy.
Okay, that might have been new. But how much talking can you do about that before it becomes redundant and silly. if the thread goes long enough someone will ask 1. can you use bungee cords instead? 2. How many centimeters from the plates are the bands? 3. why couldn’t you say inches? Then some guy benching 100 pounds will ask when he should start.
It always happens. that’s why I didn’t ask to join the t cell or didn’t sign on when I was invited. I only have so much time to post and all the silliness doesn’t really bother me. I just use what I need and ignore the nonsense.
But if people want the place and see the need and think they get a lot out of it, good for them.
