I’ve spent a few days thinking about it and I’ve arrived at the following conclusion (sorry if I repeat someone’s idea, the thread is too long to read at this point): it’s just not “cool” to be conservative.
Think about it. Obama hit’s the late night circuit where all the Hollywood types go, he goes on the Daily Show with Jon Stewart (where MOST under 30 somethings get their news from), he gets HUGE celebrity endorsements (Will.i.am from the Black Eyed Peas, George Cloony, Scarlet Johansson, Adrian Grenier to name a few - effectively hitting the music, tv and movie celebrities right there).
He’s identified with a “tribe” that MOST younger (and some not so younger) people subscribe to and want to identify with - it’s marketing fucking 101. Who did the GOP put up? Clint Eastwood? He talked to a fucking CHAIR for 20 minutes… Don’t get me wrong - I LUV me some Clint, but the guy is like 100 years old now and in his last movie he’s telling members of the younger generation to “get off my lawn!” Not exactly who younger folks identify with these days.
In today’s MEDIA saturated environment (and let’s face it, every media source other than FOX loves Obama and the Democrats and only shows them in a positive light), where celebrities are put up on pedestals and worshiped, where reality TV has turned zeros to heroes, where the American population is told HOW to THINK and is brainwashed with liberal stupidity on a daily basis, Obama could take a shit on the White House lawn and the MEDIA would do a story on how “progressive” he is and how that’s the cool thing to do now and how EVERYONE should be shitting on their lawns cuz it’s good for the environment. It’s getting pretty downright ridiculous how biased the MEDIA is.
So now that the MEDIA is controlling the message, EVERY TIME there is way to twist a Republican policy or party member mis-step, it’s broadcast all over the airwaves for weeks and the offender is crucified and eaten alive by a pack of savage MEDIA dogs with no respite UNTIL the NEXT Republican/Social Conservative steps on his proverbial dick.
And while I’m on the subject of stepping on dicks, what idiot talks about rape and god’s will in the same sentence? Seriously?! Who ARE these morons? I mean with all the MONEY the GOP is throwing at winning elections, I think they should take a few dollars and invest it in mandatory CHARM SCHOOL for all GOP candidates. Or at LEAST an 8 hour seminar on “the top ten things NEVER to say when the camera is rolling”. I mean weren’t their like TWO fucking SENATORS who were talking about “legitimate rape” and “rape is god’s will”? I don’t know WHAT they said, but the MEDIA sure got ahold of it and now we lost TWO SENATE SEATS because of that foolishness! Mandatory charm school for all GOP candidates. MOST people know that when a man talks about rape, it USUALLY doesn’t turn out being a comfortable conversation - why a POLITICIAN doesn’t know that is beyond me… Anyway, I digress.
The following few issues are what alienates the GOP platform from the MAJORITY of Americans:
-Immigration. Seriously, will ALL the Spanish speaking folks in New Mexico, Cali and Florida, you MIGHT think that completely ALIENATING them would be a bad idea. They are the LARGEST GROWING DEMOGRAPHIC and they identify with NINETY NINE PERCENT of what the Republican Party stands for. Their values are OUR values! Everything except for that part about how it’s cool for cops to just pull their people over and ask them to PROVE their legal status like it’s 1930’s Germany. Except for that part where the presidential candidate says on TV that they should “just leave”. Except for the part about how Republicans want it to be illegal for them to go to a hospital. Those things they have a problem with… Just sayin’…
-The WAR on DRUGS. Get over it. People want to smoke their weed. If at the next meeting of the republican minds, they got their collective heads out of their collective asses when it comes to marijuana, we could WIN the next election hands down. That would be a good strategy if we BEAT the Democrats to it. We are the party of personal freedom and less gov’t regulation. Why wouldn’t we want to legalize what over FORTY PERCENT of the country is doing ANYWAY. I won’t go into this anymore, there have been THREADS about this. But TWO STATES have decriminalized it, and more states won’t be far behind. Let’s get ahead of the curve on this one.
-The WAR on GAYS. Speaking of something that two states legalized by popular consensus. The GOP needs to get out of the bedroom. If you can’t bring yourself to legalize gay marriage then just STOP regulating marriage all together. Same sex couples in long term committed relationships ARE being disenfranchised. Get over it. Fags are here to stay. Don’t ask, don’t tell has gone away. Only religious nutjobs have an opinion on how two adults find their happiness. MANY of them are wealthy and but for that whole taking it up the ass thing, would fit right in to conservative ideology. It would be great to have their vote.
-The WAR on WOMEN. I know, I know. The most hotly contested topic: ABORTION. Everyone get’s their panties in a bunch over this one. Roe v Wade has been around as long as I’ve been alive. Almost 40 years (almost as long as the failed war on drugs). Does anyone REALLY think they are going to just “STOP” doing abortions? While I may find it distasteful, and many of us here think it’s a “sin”, that battle has been lost. Fucking CONCEDE it already! The only thing we accomplish by continuing to talk about it is alienating women. Let it become the RELIGIOUS ISSUE that it IS and let the CHURCHES lead that march. Not Republicans.
which brings me to…
-The WAR on EVERYONE NOT A CHRISTIAN. Guess what? Crazy Christians are how MOST Democrats view Republicans. Why? Because SO MANY CRAZY WING NUT CHRISTIANS ARE ELECTED! Seriously. The party needs to distance itself from all that religious stuff. I’m just going to stop there, lest I offend people.
HALF of the the four “wars” up there are driven by religion. A MAJORITY of the country does NOT agree with it!!! So DROP IT. Focus on the fiscal issues. Focus on smaller government. Focus on Tax Reform. Focus on restructuring the entitlements so that they might actually help those in need. Focus on building American and BUYING American (you’ll win the Union vote). Focus on promoting a CLEAN energy policy that includes drilling for oil and natural gas AND explores alternative energy.
That’s MY opinion on what the GOP needs to do to get back in touch with the America of TODAY. ALL these issues like abortion, gays, drugs and immigration are like the demons of Pandora’s Box - THEY AIN’T GOING BACK IN THE BOX! They are here to stay. Pretending it’s the 1950’s and thinking that society will regress and shrink it’s thinking about issues that over half of the population has already accepted is foolish. It’s a losing battle. And if we fail to adapt our party will go the way of the dodo bird (even you creationists can acknowledge that the dodo bird failed to adapt and subsequently became extinct, right?).

I agree with what you are saying but, would this not just be a Libertarian? Fiscally conservative and socially liberal.

I think the larger implication is that the current status quo of the GOP is not staying around.
Adapt or perish, such is politics (and life in general).
