Hey dude- thanks for the support!

Yes, Ive been increasing weights on the 5x5 quite steadily, asides of a week where I stalled.

Im really keen to understand my diet and training requirements, so perhaps you could offer me a sample diet, and training regimin you’ve found works best for gaining lean muscle.

Cheers

Personally, I’d focus on a diet that focuses on losing bodyfat over a diet for gaining muscle at this point.

When I started lifting, my stats were:

5’6", 205lbs, 27% bodyfat
Lifts: 175Sq/115 bench/205DL

I did WS4SB for eight months and cleaned my diet up. My first powerlifting was during month 8. My stats:

(height the same, obviously), 147lbs, 10% bodyfat
Lifts: 305Sq/225 bench/365DL

Do the strength program. And diet. And be patient.
Thanks for the advice dude - but what is WS4SB?!.. and can you point me to any links, and/or post up your EXACT diet and training… saying ‘clean up’ your diet is a bit vague.

Much appreciated.

So you’re still training only 2-3 hrs/wk??

As Eazy and gregron already pointed out, that simply will NOT work.

edit - I guess it will, but then we’re talking decades here

How long have you been training for?

Looks like you’ve still got a lot of weight to lose. You’re probably on the right track as-is. If you’re on 5x5, the intensity might not be at the point where you’re going to be putting on a decent amount of muscle mass yet and probabyl won’t stimulate much fat loss either. It’ll take more time. Your calories might still be high too, but if you’re losing regularly, then you’re losing regularly. As stated, you’ve still got a lot to lose, so it’ll take quite a bit of time. Patience is key here.

As for the intensity question… how much are you lifting now on the program? Are you still increasing the weight 5/10lbs each week and not experiencing any issues?
Man…

You rouglhy eat 250 to 300 g prot a day, while having virtually no muscle mass and I don’t think you weigh 250 to 300 lbs. You don’t NEED that, this is throwing money to the windows and this is also likely to cause the bloated belly that you have in your hub, which is for sure not just fat.

Start by eating 1g / body lb of prot and stop consuming so much shakes (shakes are great source of prot, but they require too much water and are likely to make you look bloated)…

And work out more. Be more active in your everyday life too.

Google is your friend.

As for as my diet goes… asking for my exact diet shows me one thing: you’re being lazy / looking for a quick way out. Who even knows if what worked for me will work for you?

Clean up your diet. That’s all there is to it. Do the research. Figure it out. Experiment.

Heya RootX - thanks for the advice…

I did think I was eating too much protein, but Im only having one protein shake, which is the one PWO…and I only drink one before workout once per week (morning session)… so Im only really taking 4 protein shakes per week…

Im going to up to 5 workouts per week, cut back protein to 1g per lb of bodyweight (so about 165g), and then see how it goes…

Any advice on carbs? as I only really have them PWO (oats in my PWO shake), but avoid them at all other times (ie dont eat any bread, rice, etc). I know there are carbs in nuts/ veg etc, but Im not including those…

Cheers

Max

Max:

I just stumbled on to TNation. I am in the exact same place as you. I started at 245, similar build. I am down to 200 but having trouble dropping belly fat. Extremities have leaned out but having trouble with the gut. It sucks!!! Being heavy all my life has had a cumulative effect on my body. Dropping the weight took 6 months but rebuilding the frame will take longer.

I just switched to a workout routine I found on TNation Fat Lose 4. I have been doing similar workouts to the 5x5 program. I will let you know how the switch works out. Best advice I have been given to lose belly fat is a great workout routine cannot over compensate for a poor diet. I don’t have any sound advice as I am in the same boat but just wanted to say keep up the good work and thanks for asking a difficult question!!!
