Edgy – That type of structure is called “columnar basalt”.
It forms when lava cools very quickly. It contracts into polygonal columns as it cools. Think of how mud cracks look from the top.
Freaking awesome pics. Totally jelly. Iceland has been on my ‘to do’ forever.

the next epic trip will be to Punta Arenas, Chile. Another mountainous area, complete with glaciers and a population of 135k. the place was originally settled for the shipping that went around the horn from the east coast to the gold fields of Cali.
this is the stepping off point for all the excursions to Antarctica.
this is a couple of years off. gotta plan way in advance for these tours, ya’know?

Awesome. Vikings always do everything right, especially their countries.
Edgy, how did you like the midnight sun?

it was awesome, the sun never went down, it just dipped into the horizon, and we were hiking and climbing so much, that I slept like a baby.
again, for most of the time we were in a country hotel, and there wasnt much going on, but the last two days (Fri/Sat) we were in Reykjavik, and the bars stay open until 5am.
it is the strangest thing to be drinking a beer at 11:30pm, and the sun is out like it was noon.
I never could make it until midnite, we kept busy and were pretty tired by that time. it was veryvery cool, tho~
This thread gets 5 stars.
