Why Drive > 80mph?

The answer to these is the same as the op’s question: Because it’s cool and because we can.

That’s why I have a motorcycle. You reach nirvana when you hit 120mph on an open stretch of road.

When you run over some kid who springs up out of nowhere, does he reach nirvana too? How cool!!!

Guess you like surprises…

I’ll say it again: why does your fun mean others have to be put at risk? Sure, on a wide open highway, what could possibly happen? “Nah, nothing will ever happen to me. I’ll never hurt anyone!”

I don’t understand the need to prove one’s manhood by driving like an idiot.

Go ahead and kill someone, all in the name of you having a good time. Have lots of laughs and enjoyment proving your manhood with your toy.

Damn these gas wasters.

These guys should seriously stop. I think I saw a kid playing in the middle of the street on the bridge!

Out of curiosity head hunter are you one of those people that feel all lanes on the free way are the same or are you one of the people that understand it is called a free way system?
The road is shared. I therefore have regard for the safety of others. If I drive drastically different from those others, too slow or too fast, I endanger them. It is a FREE way but you are not free of your responsibility to drive sanely and carefully. Putting others at risk, all to feel more ‘manly’, is simply stupid and childish.

It is actually safer, by a huge margin, to drive on the German Autobahn, where there is NO speed limit and people routinely drive 140+ MPH, than to drive on the US Interstate Highways where the speed limit is limited to 65 MPH.

Technically, there is… you’ll get a ticket on there if you’re driving faster than the rating on your tires, but I digress…

I’ve heard that stitistic before, about safer on the autobahn… do you know why?
Here they pass idiots who can’t drive because our road test now consists of 10 minutes tops of driving. What you stop at a red light, make a left then parallel park, and your done? Over in Germany the reason why the autobahn is safer than ours is the simple fact, just about everyone there knows how to drive efficiently.

From what I was told was in a driving class I took a while back the road tests there are broken into 3 sections lasting 3 days. The autobahn also does have very strict speed limits on certain types of vehicles such as public transportation and more of the heavier commercial trucks.

I dont know why no one has mentioned emergency? Prob. cause theres no need to go over 80? unless you live on a highway and are a good distance for a hospital and need to get there fast? Thoughts anyone.

(1) Gas mileage goes way down at high speeds. The same idiots who bitch about the price proceed to drive 90 mph on the freeway.
Holding steady at 90 mph would yield vastly better gas mileage than driving stop and go.

A speed limiter doesn’t = everyone going the same speed, it just creates a top-end. Some people will drive slower, some people will drive faster, unless you limit the speed to something extremely low.

When Montana enacted a speed limit on the roads that were without fatalities skyrocketed. Some people drive too fast, but what causes greater problems is artificially low speed limits based on outmoded technology and speed traps where speed limits differ vastly over short areas.

The typical 55-65mph highway speed limit was based on older freight transport via truckers and cars that were less safe and less powerful than they are today. Inconsistent speed across a traffic pattern is what causes the majority of fatalities, and when people are worried about the speed limit it will lead to it. Where I live there’s a road about 10 blocks down where it goes from 35 to 25 to 35 to 45 over the course of maybe 5 lights. There’s a reason the police have laws against disrupting the flow of traffic, even if it means you break the speed limit.

There are more people, cars go faster and they’re safer. Add it up. The current speed limits which are unrealistic are what’s causing a ton of wrecks and congestion. Traveling steadily at 90mph is safer than fluctuating, especially on a road with more than 3 lanes.

Driving like a maniac implies a loss of control, which again, is not an issue when you’re talking about speeds under 100 for pretty much any car produced after 1985. Drunk drivers, aggressive drivers, generally reckless drivers; it’s not a question of speed with them, although it can play a role. The speeds are which most people are traveling are not sufficient to prompt a loss of control in a modern vehicle. It’s simply people being douchebags, and you’re certainly living up to the douchebag standard by using inflammatory language that isn’t even relevant to what’s being discussed.

In Kansas- pedestrians are prohibited on the freeway. So, if you DID hit a kid that SPRANG up on the freeway, you would actually be helping out some, because the state troopers don’t patrol the freeways, (but they DO patrol the mcdonalds at the rest stops), so they wont catch the little law breaker.

However, adding a cattle guard to the front of your pickp is advisable.

and 99 chevy 2500’s top out at about 96, even though the speedometer goes to 100.
Easy E wrote:
And I cant stand the people who are in the left lane doing 60-65 while there is NOBODY in the middle lane and will not get out of your way.
Hallelujah! Inside lanes are for passing, not cruising.

In some traffic conditions I driver faster than 80 mph and feel reasonably safe. In other traffic conditions I see someone driving 55 mph and think they’re going to get someone killed. Speed vs traffic conditions is more important than speed vs some discrete number.

Head Hunter,

Have you considered moving to China and becoming a citizen?

…I prefer chrome. MUCH easier to clean the blood and Abercrombie gear off.

I agree with the OP.

And while we’re at it, lets get rid of larger than average breasts, I mean what can you do with anything larger than a B?

Get rid of spicy food. C’mon, do we NEED salsa, hot mustard, tobasco and chili?

Get rid of calorie-dense food. Bye-bye pizza and sausage and just about every friggin’ cookout food.

Get rid of the 80+lb dumbbells. You’ll only hurt yourself or someone else. We should only be doing bodyweight calisthenics and yoga anyway.

Get rid of loud radios. I usually squat with easy-listening turned down low anyway. Anything louder and I’m apt to put on another plate and get hurt. Oh yeah, ban the 45’s and rock&roll while we’re at it.

Ban large houses. Any prisoner will tell you all you need is a 10x10 or 8x8 to be happy.

Oh, and I think fire is too damn hot. Did 'ya ever stick your hand in a Goddamn fire? Well it hurts like hell! Ban it! Or at least tone down the temperature.

Great Danes. How big are these things gonna get? I mean if I wanted a horse…

Dude, this is T-Nation, T… Testosterone.

What you should be asking is, “Why does the governor kick in at only 100 when my speedometer goes to 140?”

Stupid safety things.

I know exactly how you feel. I totally agree with headhunter for once. Too many people die on the roads for no reason at all except some dipshit wanted to save a few seconds.

You obviously haven’t seen how they drive in china. Trust me, he wouldn’t like it. The first time you see 7 vehicles side by side on 4 lanes is an experience you never forget. Although they do drive quite slow.

Interesting fact: In the modern era, the German autobon, which allows much higher rates of speed than our interstate in many places/ times of day, has fewer deaths per liscenced driver than the US Interstate system. Experts point to the German Laws strictly enforcing lane discipline as the reason. In some places on the autobon, you can pass a cop going 130 and never get a second look, but if you pass another car in the RIGHT lane, your ass is in deep ----.
I think that german cops carry those full size uzi’s, and can cut people in half with them.

Can we first do something about all these teenage idiots driving Mustang GTs?

ok, i speed every fucking day of my life, unless for some reason im just not driving anywhere. everyday to school or work im hitting 100mph on roads that are 55-65mph.

BUT…i am not dumb enough to make a statement such that i would be much safer if everyone else was driving at these speeds, or if the speed limit was higher, etc.

was it not hammered into everyones brain in high-school physics that every action has an equal and opposite reaction? force x acceleration x blah blah blah…

POINT BEING, when you lose control of your car at 90mph, youve got a exponentially greater chance of getting seriously injured than you do when you lose control at 35mph, or even 55mph. i mean, is this not common sense?

i mean come on. people that fly on sport bikes and whatever, i know theyre having a fucking blast. im somewhat envious. ive been over 120mph on two different honda rockets, and mother of god thats fun, but scared the hell out of me, because if i fuck up, or otherwise lose control, they are fucking scraping me off the road. on the other hand, the same bike at 35mph or 55mph probably is not going to kill you (depending on whats around you).

everyone keep speeding, please. i know i will, im certainly not here to beg anyone to stop, but come on- at what point does your safety matter> im pretty sure its when you wreck that it matters the most. none of us want to wreck, but shit happens. i doubt anyone that wrecks at 100+ mph in a car, motorcycle, whatever, would not trade places with a wreck at a lower speed if they could.

Well, I do not want to wreck and I especially do not want to wreck at 55+MPH, let alone 100 MPH. It seems my odds of wrecking increase the faster I go relative to my environment, I.G. slow highway traffic, back road, school district where kids are walking, etc. People seem to not care if they are doing 10 MPH below the posted speed limit in the far left lane, even when the other lanes are clear, some pedestrians think you will stop, some even slow down and dare you to hit them.

If you drive fast, do it sensibly. Speed does not kill, different speed kills.
