I have to agree that driving fast is fun. Plain and simple. If your interested in saving gas then automakers should limit acceleration rates on vehicles instead of top speeds. Think of how many assholes floor it from one red light to the next and consume 3X the gas as conservative driving. Almost everyone, at least in my city. Now think of how many people get on the street and open up at 130 mph+. Very few. It also has to do with freedom. If someone wants to cruise at 220 mph across Alligator Alley in a TT Viper with zero traffic then they should. As long as no innocent people get killed it’s their right. Speed limits in parts of Texas are 70, 75, and 80 m.p.h.
I don’t like the idea of anyone fixing the speed of a vehicle I use my hard earned money to buy to govern out at a speed they think is safe.
That is a subjective decision at best. As mentioned earier - the autobahn (sp) is much safer without regulation than any domestic road we travel on here in the US.
Why 80? The speed limit used to be 55 - some say that is fast enough. God knows there are enough old farmers’ widows around here that think that is too fast.
Saying a vehicle is too fast is like saying someone has too much money.
Besides - it would do even more damage to the auto industry - and i don’t want to hear anymore over paid union screwdrivers bitching about not having a job.

If you’re handed the keys to a beast like the one pictured here, and you hear that Italian V12 snarl (or whatever car does it for you) and your balls don’t drop an extra inch and something doesn’t stir inside you, well then . . . there’s a glass jar at the front desk in the lobby of “Metrosexual Magazine’s” offices where you can just submit your nuts.
Just about every car in the free world goes at least 80 mph. It’s not the car, it’s the people that choose to drive fast. So the question is not why cars should be able to go 80 mph, it’s why do people drive 80 mph?
The reasons, it’s friggin fun to drive that fast and you get there quicker. You can drive 80 mph and still drive safe (on the highway of course, not surface streets). There are speed limits in the US at 75 mph. What’s the difference? You don’t like it, then stay to the right or stick to surface streets.
This is going to come back the old argument that if you are going to limit the speed of cars then you should also ban cigarettes, alcohol, fast food, guns and anything else that has a health or safety risk.
All of that may be a good idea if you are happy living in a world where you are not able to make any choices as they have already been made for you.
The ability to choose is both a wonderful and a dangerous thing.
Why should a human being need to squat 900 pounds? Why diet down to a bodyfat of < 3%? Why put on plastic pads and beat the crap out of each other for money?
The answer to these is the same as the op’s question: Because it’s cool and because we can.

That’s why I have a motorcycle. You reach nirvana when you hit 120mph on an open stretch of road.
I bought a skyline gtr about 8 months ago. It can easily do 250-260km/h with no hassle, but I think it’s just a responsibility thing. Ever since I started taking my car to the track and driving as fast as possible, when I go to drive on the regular roads again I have no urge to drive fast, I just keep it easy at the speed limit. Not to mention if I got in an accident speeding with a car like that, I’d never be able to afford insurance again.
But yeah, going fast is hella fun. I laugh when people try to race me with their shitty 1/2 ton trucks, pretty funny.
So I can get where I want to go quicker.
And when Im driving faster I am more alert and aware of whats going on around me.
And I cant stand the people who are in the left lane doing 60-65 while there is NOBODY in the middle lane and will not get out of your way.
Then I turn into an asshole.

I’m not against anyone having fun. Like I said, have fun but don’t endanger others in your fun. Does ‘fun’ entail killing someone, all so you can go fast? Take up skydiving or MMA or something.
And maybe you can slip and fall getting out of bed and hit your head on the corner of the dresser and die. So why even bother getting out of bed? It’s much more safe and cozy in there.

That sums up our right to bear arms, to speak freely, and enjoy all the great things of this country or any place else that allows such freedom. Including the beautiful smell of combusting hydrocarbons.
Also any corvette '97 or newer will do in excess of 30+ mpg at 80 or above. All that horsepower that allows you to rocket to at least a 172 mph top speed also allows you to cruise at 80+ at under 1Krpm. My Sentra? 80MPH takes me above 3K of a 6.5K redline. under 27 miles to the gallon.
