Why Do BBers Do Strength Programs?

I gotta say, as someone with 13" arms (unpumped, unflexed) who has a 1RM of 105 kg, I’m finding it very hard to wrap my head around this. That said, I’ve seen some weird stuff out there so I am willing to believe you.

This won’t go all the way to explaining it, but how long are his arms? We often talk about good powerlifters who have T-Rex arms, so does this guy’s hands by any chance hang around his knees?

I am dead serious. This guy’s arms are obviously bigger than mine (16") while being much leaner. He has the upperbody of a serious physique competitor. Can’t bench anything.

So we’ve gone from ‘lots of guys’ to ‘this guy’ and ‘180-200lb yolked upper bodies’ to ‘serious physique competitor.’

Oh and I still call either a) complete BS or B) you’re leaving out or are ignorant of some extra information like, this is not fresh in his workout, or he’s doing slow negatives/strict tempo, or you saw him on his deload week just breaking a sweat, or he has one arm.

bs x3

Try focusing on your own workout rather than worrying about other people’s.

LOL’ed at “has one arm”

Amayakyrol, one thing to remember is that a lean arm is going to look a lot more impressive and bigger than a softer arm. A ripped 15 inch arm will look a lot bigger than a smooth 16 inch arm. That is the illusion that leanness creates.

Anyway, OP… All training styles depend on the trainers goals. IMO, training for size and strength are not mutually exclusive. Work in different rep ranges and sets so that you are getting the required volume to reach your goals. The “right” rep range, set, volume, exercise selection and frequency are a very individual thing. What works for someone may not work for someone else.

As far as SS goes… That program will not make you look like a bodybuilder and should not, again IMO, be suggested to people who’s goals aren’t strength or athletics. 5/3/1 on the other hand is good for people of all stages. You can use the 5/3/1 progression to continue gaining strength while using an assistance template like The Peridization Bible in order to get adequate volume and varying exercises to build a balanced physique.

I have seen girls with smaller than 16 inch arms benchpress 225.

I question whether or not it is an issue of cant or if it is an issue of doesn’t. What type of weight does he do his work sets with and about how many reps does he do in those sets?

The heaviest I have ever seen him benching was 205 for half reps with a spotter and that looked like a damn struggle.

It is the strangest thing I have ever seen in my life.

I have MUCH smaller than 16 inch arms (14.5) and would not trade size for strength anyday. 16 reps at 225 is my limit, but the first dozen seem fairly easy.

Well I don’t think anyone going for aesthetics would trade size for strength. But with more muscular size comes more strength, usually.
