Why bother with egg whites?

Maybe someone can clear this up with me. I tried an egg-white omelette again this morning and, of course, it was disgusting.

My question: why bother with egg whites?

A large size (33g) egg has 3.597g of protein in the white. Ten of these is about 36g of protein. No matter what you put in it, it tastes awful and is a chore to make and eat. Seventy eggs a week isn’t cheap, either.

Yet, for this expense, I can have a high-quality protein shake with 40+g of protein. It goes down better and is basically as dense. I can still eat other breakfast foods and I personally don’t see any difference.

Is the egg white protein actually ‘better’ than a good protein shake, or does it just come down to personal preference?

It’s “better” in so far as it’s real solid food. Egg whites are a great medium for making other stuff. I mostly agree with you though, and as such, I always leave a few of the eggs whole to get some flavor and fluffiness back.

Thank you for asking this question. I’ve never really understood this myself.

I see these diets where they talk about having 10 egg whites at two or three meals during the day and wonder if these folks have a separate fridge just for eggs or a yard full of chickens.

Sticking with my 5lb jug’o’powder.

Leaving the endless cartons of rubber omelettes for others.

I do it because it just adds a little variety to a pretty monotonous diet. I eat mine with keto ketchup, and actually look forward to a change of pace from chugging goddamn shakes all the time. To each his own…

I actually enjoy my egg white omeletes. Load em full of onion, peppers, chick breast, various spices and such. Damn good.

Another good way to do it you want to try is pit the whites in a non stick pan and topp with whatever you plan. Then bake it instead of pan frying. Seems to stay a bit more moist.

I do enjoy my whole eggs as well though. It just depends on the timing and my current diet/goals.

Hope this helps,

Phill

Well, I think egg whites are delicious. I eat 3 egg whites + 1 yolk everymorning on toast, plain. Egg yolk tastes disgusting to me unless it’s scrambled eggs.

I usually eat a dozen scrambled egg whites about three-four times a day.

Egg whites are cheap, high-enough Biologic Value protein for a non-post-workout meal, and, in my opinion, they taste good. They certainly taste better than a protein powder of comparable price. Lots of protein powders are full of junk I don’t want to make the staple of my diet - mostly fat and sugars and sugar substitutes.

Like many have said, you dont want all your protien comming from shakes, and when your eating 7 or 8 times a day, thats alot of chicken/steak/tuna/etc, usually the eggs are just to mix it up a little bit, like you said where do you keep all these eggs? not to mention my mom and dad complain al the time they have to shop twice a week now, 5 lbs of chicken and turkey sausage, and 4 dozen eggs each time, so i try to keep it to a dozen a day…6 egg whites(one of the yokes), scoop of grow in oatmeal for breakfast…before bed 6 egg whites(with 2 of hte yokes) with some chicken or turkey sausage thrown into the pan too…rest of the meals come from various meats, and maybe 1 or 2 from shakes if i’m pressed for time…just mix it up, dont get bored eating hte same thing over and over, thats all

Real whole food is always better than a shake.

I recently tried Omega 3 eggs and now I stick with them as a regular part of the food log.

Just my 2 cents.

Agreed, but not at the expense of taste or enjoyment.

Regarding some of the comments above, it’s one thing to mix in peppers and onions into an egg white omelette, but chicken/turkey sausage? It’s lowish fat, but not low fat - you might as well put the yolk back in! Not to mention the carb boost from the sausage.

My shakes are all low fat (less than 2.5g) and I have some low carb and some med carb. Either way, I’ll take 'em over those slimey egg whites.

I prefer 3-4 whole food meals and 3-4 shakes per day. I just can’t stomach egg whites and don’t want them for breakfast. And I don’t see the point when you have to use so much for so little protein.

But as we have seen, each to his, or her, own.

Ya’ll are really paranoid over yolks. I consume 20 whole eggs every week and i still get leaner. not only that, i consume 2-3 tbs of coconut oils every day plus 6 capsules of fish oils plus big ass steak every other night. At least 1 tbs of flax oil a day. PLently of extra virgin olive oil for big salads that i eat 2-3 every day. my bf% hovers around 7%. Oh yeah i use butter for cooking steak or chicken.

Omega-3 eggs are indeed great. I’ve been using them for some time now. I probably have 4 dozen a week. That includes a dozen yolks, because if you’re just eating the whites then you’re throwing your money out the window since all the Omega-3 fatty acids are obviously in the yolk! Don’t be afraid, eat your yolks!!

  1. I hope you taking antioxidants including at least 800 IU vitamin E/day to protect the fats you are ingesting (not a criticism as my diet is also high in fat).

  2. I notice that you (appropriately) eat lots of omega 3 fatty acids and monunsaturates along with your saturated fats. Would you be willing to eat just the saturated fats without the monos and omega 3s?

I never said I was affraid of yolks, they simply dont always fit my meals.

I also take in my fish oils, as well as 1/4 cup coconut milk a day. More than my share of red meat , salmon, turkey, as well as whole eggs.

Just depends on the time of day and what else I am eating with it.

I have nothing againts fats, and think to many ppl actually short themselves in this department. I see nothing wrong with an egg white omelete either. Loaded, with higher GI veggies, xtra lean meat and possibly topped with some salsa and a sweet potatoe on the side.

Just my 2 cc.

First of all, you don’t just have to eat egg whites alone. I put some season salt, and butter spray on mine, and it taste quite good.

As tungsten was saying, don’t be concerned with egg whites. For as many people here who endorse them and see no negative things, I have yet to see one who has seen bad things come out of moderate yolk consumption.

I drink 4-5 raw eggs a day. Never had a problem w/ any type of food poisoning. It is the way, the light, and the truth.

why do I eat egg whites?

  1. I can’t gain weight off powders and crap like that.

  2. It’a the highest BV of any whole food protein which will always be better for you than powders.

  3. tastes fine to me

Tungsten:

You eat that many egg yokes and coconut oil??? If I did that I’d die of a heart attack by age 30.
You just have different genetics. Don’t preach to other people to do that. We’re all different. One man’s trash is another man’s treasure… What’s good for you isn’t always good for someone else.

Going with egg whites is worthwhile if you are trying to cut back on total calories and/or saturated fat (ie cutting cycle). When eating to gain using whole eggs should be fine as long as you maintain a balance of fats.

A typical protein shake mainly whey based and is not a fair comparison to eggs. Whey does not provide the sustained protein release that whole foods do nor will have the same amount of micronutrients. Lastly eggs are number one on the protein bio-availability list.

I use the egg product. Some Eggbeaters with some chicken or ham, some vegatables. I have a shake later in the day when I can’t eat solid food (during work) and another one after my workout. The body needs food and I look forward to eating in the morning. It’s more filling than a shake.
