Why are Heavy Dumbells on the Bottom Rack?

At Defranco’s they have the heaviest DBs in the middle (up to 150 I think) (about arms’ length for most people), next heaviest on top, and lightest on the bottom. They also have a really sturdy DB rack (the one with the round rubber cups for each DB).

But then Joe is a lot more savvy than your average Globo Gym manager.
wheres Defranco’s? i assume youre from pittsburgh
Defranco’s (as in Joe Defranco, Westside for Skinny Bastards, etc) is in Wyckoff, New Jersey. I have only been there for one weekend but did take note of their thoughtfully laid out DB rack while I was there. Yeah I’m from Pittsburgh.

wii DB’s…really? At least its a way for couch potatoes to do something I guess. Its a step, maybe not in the right direction, but a step nonetheless.

I know of a good gym in Pittsburgh.

What exactly would the definition of a ‘heavy Dumbbell’ be? i’m thinking 90s and up. I can throw the rest around easily enough I dont care where they go.

So where on the rack do the Wii dumbbells go? I dont know if anyone on this site is at a high enough level to use these yet. Do they get a whole rack to them selves?
I consider 100+ heavy. I realize this might be light for some of you guys but it’s heavy enough to be a pain in the ass for me too put back after using them for a few sets.

So really, about the heavy dumbbell question, its more like the definition is dependant on the size of your guns. Course if you use the 100s your risking life and limb by setting off the lunk alarm. Its all going to boil down to common sense. Aesthetics vs. Practicability. It’d be good if it was someones job to run around after everyone and pick up their weights and put them away. We could just drop our weights and whistle for the picker-upper and move on.

My Local Y has those rubber cups for each DB to. It’s such a pain in the a$$ b/c they’re to small. Takes me like 15sec to get it in right so it doesn’t slip and crush my fingers.
And even though they’re labeled the dbs are still usually out of order

Isn’t that where the guy went on a shooting spree?

yup

Defrancos is in NJ I believe.

You have a point…

Obviously they don’t belong on the top rack, but why is there even a bottom rack for dumbbells? See the attached pic. Why can’t gyms just keep the 100+ dummbells on the floor.

Both my gyms have a bigger style of rack pictures here and it’s always a bitch placing the heavy dumbells in the bottom rack. Why can’t the leave that bottom shelf out so you can simpy drag or roll the fuckin things neatly under the rack? What purpose is served by holding the dumbells 2 inches off the floor?
My gym has the heaviest ones 130-220’s down on the floor because they are custom made.

However the reason for the heavy ones on the bottom is because it allows them to use less material in the rack (cheaper for the customer) while still keeping the rack from being easily tipped over.

i hate the dumbell rack, i spent about 5 mins looking for a fucking matching pair yesterday, the gym i go to has like 3 staff, only one of them is strong enough lift the heavy dumbells but hes a stuck up PT who doesnt help out, so im left at the wrath of lazy ass bastards who finish a set of DB presses, drop the weights and walk off

b/c the world is made to **** you. Sorry.

When I’m doing DB rows I love that they’re on the bottom.

When I’m doing OHP or benching, I hate that they’re on the bottom!

what would you rather have fall on your head or arm? an 100 pd dumbbell or a 10 lb dumbbell/thread
