Who's Getting a PS3?

Professor X has the point. The only advantage Wii has on the other new gen consoles is the Wiimote. I don’t see how hard it is for Sony and Microsoft to match that. Especially for Sony, who came up with all sort of interactive gadgets like lightgun, eyetoy, buzz, guitar, drum, dancemat etc. on PS1 and PS2.

It is very gimmicky, and Nintendo seem to be getting out of the habit of dishing out benchmark titles regularly with Rare plying their trade elsewhere. It’s a bit of a shame.

So, only good games are made with Rare? That’s a shame.

It’s been a long long time since I had a game console. The last one I bought was the Sega Genesis (I think) with Sonic the Hedgehog.

I’m starting to get interested in the PS3 though. Certainly not for Christmas or anything like that, but maybe some time next year…

What do you guys think?

Oh, yeah, crawling around the web I’ve found that you can load Linux on the PS3, which is cool for ultra-geek types like myself.

PS2 is the last console I’ll ever by from Sony.

Unless their production quality goes way up and a huge set of must-have titles debut exclusively on their system.

I’m getting a wii and I can’t wait.

Call me a Nintendo fanboy but they’ve never let me down in the past. It’s a clever design with genuine innovation; Nintendo played the long-shot here and I think it will pay off in the end.

The 360 and the PS3 are simply more of the same, upgrades of their predecessors.

The wii mote, I think, is more than just a gimmick. I could be dead wrong but I believe it will do to gaming what the mouse did to personal computing. I think Nintendo has recognized that this crop of consoles must offer the gaming community something more than superior graphics. An article, I’d encourage you to read:

http://www.pointlesswasteoftime.com/games/crash.html

Nintendo has been the impetus for every major innovation in gaming except for the CD (actually, they paid sony to make the cd drive then dropped them- one of the worst business decisions in all history… a whole other story).

At any rate, having Zelda, Mario, and Metroid in my roster is worth the price of admission alone.

At any rate, I’ll probably end up with more than one at some point in the future. However, the Wii is the must-have console for me.

The Game cube was an utter disaster. If Nintendo didnt dominate the handheld market, they would be making games for the PS3 and 360 right now. They are INCREDIBLY lucky to still be in the business after 1 disaster of a system, the Gamecube and staying with carts for the Nintendo 64. 2 horrendous decisions and also the fact they are being slow to adopt online play makes their future still shaky.

I’ve played the Wii. Its for young teens. The controller is a gimick and once the “wow this is different” effect wears off it will have lost its thunder. It wasnt a bad decision by Nintendo but its not going to revolutionize video games. Its just going to be different. Nintendo will give 2 Zeldas, 2 marios and 2 Metroids and thats really all the system will have. Everything else will be on the 360 or PS3, look much better and have deeper gameplay.

No, however, as a Gamecube owner I can tell you that the “must-have” titles compared to previous Nintendo systems were few and far between… that is, in my view.

I guess it’s a silly thing to argue about. I’d love to be proven wrong, as no videogames apart from the new Zelda title (which I have on the GC) and the GTA franchise have appealed to me for a while.

The GTA games along with the free roaming aspect of the Spiderman games is what got me back into playing. The thought that goes into creating an entire little world to do whatever the fuck you want to in seems more creative to me than anything else.

A disaster?

I don’t know exactly what qualifies a console as a disaster.

The gamecube sold 21 million units.

Your lack of personal appreciation for a particular system doesn’t qualify it as a disaster.

To claim Nintendo is “lucky” to still be making consoles betrays a total lack of financial sense, let alone knowledge of the video game industry. I’m not really sure you know what you’re talking about here.

Nintendo, financially, is the most successful of the big three. Even if they don’t outsell their rivals, they can still keep making consoles for a long, long time.

At this point it appears Nintendo is willing to become a niche company. This is fine and will prove lucrative as long as they play it smart.

I guess you’re not in the niche.

Everyone I know has a gamecube. I mean, we all think it’s the shit. Jesus, there’s Mario Kart, Super Smash, Monkey Ball…I’ve probably logged over 1000 hours between those three alone.

Nintendo went from the #1 console maker to number 3 out of 3 in under 6 years. Ruminate on that one for a while. had they not had the Gameboy they would have been gone by now.

That’s what they’re trying to do with the Wii. They’re playing catchup with a very affordable & fun system.

Nunchucks anyone?

If Sony continues with the train wreck they (Nintendo) will be a solid #2 and probably take #1 in a year or two.

Sony made some very grave mistakes this generation and they have a very long uphill climb.

Especially since they announced that the PS3 will not retire for 10 years.

maybe its because i have better things to spend money on. maybe its because i’m a college student. maybe its because i’ve been exposed to an inordinate amount of gaming retards at my college. or maybe its because i have better things to do with my time/life but i don’t think i’ll be getting one.

(and no i’m not flaming those of you who are getting one; its just from my POV)

Ding ding… now that’s an incentive!!!

Actually, I just read a review for fight night 3 on the PS3, which lets you “get in the ring” as opposed to an outside camera angle.

I don’t know if that includes virtual online combat.

This may be true, but I don’t have a history of dealing with Sony, so I’ll take their abuse over that of Mickeysoft… though I’m perfectly willing to hate both companies eventually.

It would be a lot easier to believe this part of your message if you weren’t standing there with a smoking flamethrower in your hands… heh.

It might. But without speech support, I don’t know how much fun it’ll be. Talking smack while punching away is at least 50% of the fun. Even if it’s bragging about how much abuse your face is inflicting on your opponent’s gloves.

Without voice, it’s probably like playing a different, more adaptable AI.

getting in the ring just means it gives you a first person perspective. I saw a demo at Bestbuy yesterday.

That perspective is actually not that cool. The original perspective where you can see your own fighter and the other fighter is better IMO.

I agree with the talking smack though. That would be freakin hilarious if you could do that…

happy holidays.

Has it actually been done yet? I’ve read that its a bitch to get it working and Linux seems to be crippled since no support for PS3 hardware.

But DAMN! I’d be cool to have such a cheap liquid cooled PC. Powerful too.

I already have a wii and will get a xbox 360 sometime in 2007…

but I don’t want a ps3. The ps3 doesnt impress me really, i mean nice graphics are good but what about the gameplay?

I think the PS3 needs a little more time before we actually get a good idea of what it can do.
