Whole Egg vs. Egg Whites

After all that has said about egg yolks being bad in the past and now you read that the egg is the perfect food. What is the real deal? Can we eat the whole egg or is it better to eat only the whites and why?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Eric

I read somwhere (if my memory proves correct), that the yolk makes up for 1/2 the protein in eggs and has all the nutrients, minerals, etc…I think its been said that the yolk was bad because of cholesterol…but cholesterol is important in keeping testosterone levels up…I think I read this in one of the T-Nation articles on dieting…run a search

That was a great thread Trib.

To the OP,read the thread when you click on the link. I’m sure that will answer all your questions.

First off I want to thank each of you for your time and input. I read through the thread and got valuable information. I was asking the initial question because I had blood work done a few months ago and my total cholesterol was 302. The doc told me I was a walking heart attack and she wanted to put me on a prescription right away. I told her I did want it, I want to try some natural things first. High Cholesterol does run on both sides of my family, however so do bad eating habits.

After reading through the thread I am going to retest myself and see where I am now since I started working out again a couple of months ago and I have cut all the junk out of my diet. I was worried that with such high cholesterol to start that I all the food I have been eating while bulking up was making it worse. I will take your advise and just test myself. Again thanks!!

No problem.
Those are some scary numbers.
I’m assuming you’re not really fat, since you were talking about bulking up.
I’ve been doing the AD since I came off my bulk a while ago, that is great for lowering your cholesterol.
Even if you want to remain on a well-balanced diet, try doing a few simple things:

Daily exercise

30 grams of fiber daily or more (a must)

Take 6-10 fish oil daily (a must)

Make sure you’re eating 4-7 serving of fruits and vegetables daily

Stay away from white, bleached flour ,refined flour,and/or sugar (try eating more whole grains, sprouted grains, and oatmeal)

And also, stay away from hydrogenated oils-trans fats. Read the ingredients on the back of everything you eat and if it says the word “hydrogenated”,don’t eat it or buy it. Food companies can put “Trans fat free” on their products as long as there is under one gram of trans fats, meaning 0.5 grams. So,chips might say that.

So,you think thats not much, but really, thats per serving. No one eats just 5 or 10 chips. They usually eat more. So,in other words, you’d really be consuming over a gram of trans fat.
After a few weeks of doing those things, message me and tell me if your cholesterol levels went down.

About the eggs, eating the yolk isnt going to hurt you it carries alot of the minerals, and protein in it. I have recently purchased LL cool J platnuim workout ( i purchased it jus because i was interested in the kind of training he does, high reps, supersets.) he eats eggs with the yolk and reccomends.

He doesnt reccomend it by his opinion he reccomends it with alot of research hes read and interviewing nutritionist and his trainer scooter? goin i thinkk is his last name.

I LOVE EGGS

That one got interesting didn’t it.

I still eat 12-15 a day. I do drain the pool of grease off my ground beef though. Still plenty of fat though. There has to be some sane limits.

Slight thread hijack, but how the hell do you manage to eat so many eggs? I love eggs and recently tried to get my intake up from two a day to four, and got bad constipation in the space of about a week. Does the cooking method make a difference? I used to eat them boiled.

Also, I eat a ton of veggies, flax and oatmeal, so its not like i dont get fibre.

From someone who also eats a lot of eggs, eh, it’s easy? (Never gives me eh, “issues” either).

I don’t know if cooking them in different ways makes any difference, but, throughout the course of a normal day for me, I’ll have say 4 scrambled in the AM, at least two hard boiled with lunch, another two hard boiled with dinner, and then any other count that’s mixed in with the numerous foods, or low carb type desserts my wife and I make. Hell, come to think of it, I’m probably averaging a dozen or so whole eggs, minimum, just about every day, LOL.

Yeah, they really are the perfect food. And anabolic as hell, hehe.

Well, if LL Cool J recommends it, it must be true!

Eggs are great, but why would anyone follow the nutritional advice of a musician?

My friends call me egg man because I eat so many. I love them. It’s funny because if you think about it, the diet industry has brain washed us into craving shitty foods. When I was a skinny kid, all I craved was white sugary treats. But now, I crave fatty foods a little more. Blue cheese dressing with beef taco salad with spinach is better than candy to me-much more palatable. The gas, however, can be a different story.

Really, in this thread, the real issue has now become NOT whether you should eat the egg whole or not; rather, how should they be prepared for optimal assimilation?

If you are able to stomach raw eggs, that’s great. However, before you head off into your kitchen for a Rocky-inspired 6-egg breakfast, keep these thoughts in mind:

*If eaten raw, make sure that they are of the highest quality (I.e. organic, range-raised-fed)
*The whites contain trypsin inhibitors, so limit consumption of raw whites
*The yolks contain the bulk of the fat soluble vitamins so important for health and body building. Due to vitamins’ temperature sensitivities, the yolks should in many cases, be consumed raw. They of course, can be added into scrambled whites to give additional flavor, consistency and color as well as into many other dishes.
*Regardless of the source, various strains of Salmonella and other viruses can and will be present on the shells and in some cases in the egg itself. This will only become an issue if you have an extremely compromised intestinal flora and happen to be unlucky enough to consume the small percentage of eggs that have the bad Salmonella strains present. I can attest that in the many years that I have been consuming a large portion of my eggs raw, I have NEVER had any gastrointestinal distress whatsoever (let alone poisoning). While anecdotal, according to conventional wisdom, I’m the luckiest mo-fo in the country. I only include this point to be completely fair and honest.
*For many, at first, the taste and texture is unpleasant. Drop the yolks into a shake, water or any other liquid for that matter and that problem will take care of itself. Eventually, you can wean yourself away from this practice.

Do I advocate only eating eggs raw? Absolutely not! Just don’t cook them until they resemble a faded frisby and for fuck sake, DO NOT MICROWAVE THEM (unless you need a super ball to play with)! Additionally, in my humble opinion, hard boiling them in the traditional 15 minute under boiling water method is just as bad as microwaving them. To make better hardboiled eggs that won’t have you setting off an H2S monitor later that day, bring the water to a boil and then drop it down to low and let them simmer for about the same amount of time…walah… hard boiled eggs without the embarrassment and the colon blockage.

An additional note: to make your scrambled eggs more bioavailable, adding a tablespoon or two or creme will do the job…along with making the eggs more palatable(preferably use the creme that hasn’t been ultra-pasteurized and rendered useless). Fried eggs cooked in tallow, lard or butter can be considered extremely health-providing as well (keeping the temperature at a ‘not-scorching’ level).

well idk maybe if you have happend to look at him he obviosly knows what he is doing ? but if you would of read my post you would of seen that i put he recomends it, but he recomends it with scientific research and interviewing several doctors and nutriotinist, I was just saying i read documentation from several doctors and nutritionist on the topic of eggs in his book.

Yeah LL probably looks better than half the people on this site and hes jacked, thats why we’re gonna listen to him. Obviously everyone is different but to look like that he knows what he is doing.

High Chloestrol is not an indicator of CHD. Far from it.

Yeah, I could eat eggs until I died. Scrambled, poached, over easy, omelettes, even just boiled. Love em. I’d rather eat manfood now than shit as well. Steak and chicken thighs rock heavily.
