Who Grows a Fruit/Veg Garden?

The white tails ate everything last year. If we ever get some rain I may throw some turnip seed out in the creek for Freddy and his harem.

With no season, maybe you need to process some venison.
My bro swears axis is the best.

started from seed or currently planted:
2 varieties heirloom tomatoes
Sweet peppers
Jalapeno peppers
2kinds of Broccoli
Collard greens
Snap peas
Green beans
Cucumbers
Strawberries
Huckleberry bushes
Sunflowers (each family member grows a seed, tallest wins)
A whole bunch of different herbs

Bitter melon and Malabar spinach are coming in really well. Bitter melon grows like a weed. The Malabar spinach took a bit to get going but is thriving now.

Also growing moringa this year (dwarf variety)

Unfortunately bitter melon died off. Not sure why but all the fruit had bug holes. Trying some okra in its place instead. Hopefully better luck with that.

Pulled out the early spring floral annuals and replaced with fenugreek and acorn squash (seeds)

We had one of the coldest and wettest “springs” on record. Only had 5 hours of +70degree temps this year till today. So, lots of stuff I grew from seed died off once I transplanted back in April. RIP.

Replanted a bunch of store bought starters this weekend, and planted some other stuff from seed. I’ll take pics when it sprouts. Don’t want to jinx it yet lol.

Plants died…
Now you are getting a farmer’s education.

Better Luck this planting!
Collards? Was a bit surprised.

At lunch, a pal was talking about hot banana peppers - says almost too hot to eat.
I asked if cross pollinated, but he said no. Never heard of such - they never have any heat.

Yeah, also dealing with rabbits and squirrels nibbling on the starters. Wife won’t let me get a BB or airsoft gun :(. Collard starters were the only thing that didn’t die off, they just straight up didn’t grow at all for 6weeks. They’re finally growing again after last week got some sun and warmed up to the low 60s. Looks like spring/summer is gonna finally start hitting this week so I have high hopes things will go better this time around.

I actually had some banana peppers planned too. I buy them at the local farmers market for pickling. Some people think bell peppers have some heat too, so maybe they’re just hyper sensitive?

We tried. Things died.

Like with your favorite team, next year is our year…

Maybe Hungarian hot wax peppers?

Jalapenos are between 2,000-8,000 Scoville units

Maybe so CL, but I kinda lean towards a bit of cross pollination.

Gonna skirt the Hill Country in a couple of weeks driving to SA - bet it’s hot already.
105 at Abilene 3 weeks ago at noon!

How’s your gardening this year?

@Californiagrown Maybe they’re sissies and sensitive haha

Cross pollination happens to the best of us… lol mom grew some bell peppers once that made jalapeños blush.

No garden this year. We are in a extreme drought conditions here. It’s rained all around us, just not here, we are burning up. Two weeks ago we had 17 fires on one stretch of state highway east of town.

Forecast is for 103-107 for next week. We have already had several days over 100. Almost as bad as it was 2011.

Sorry to hear that - prayers for you to stay safe.
Respect to the VFD - unsung good neighbors.

We got an 1.25 inches of rain last week, it helped but nowhere near where we should be for the year.

The local VFD had help from TFS and they called in two planes and a jet. The guy flying the jet was crazy! No fear. It was incredible to watch. He even dusted the fire and county trucks with the retardant. Wild.
