Gardeners, Help w/ Roses?

This is about as non-testosterone oriented as one can get but what the hell… Anyone good with roses? I have some climbing Blaze that aren’t really climbing and blooming so profusely that they’re staring at the ground.

Buehler?

Anyone?

Do you have a train or trellis of some kind for them?

Go out and buy this book, Taylors Guide to Roses. This is the bible for rose bushes.

With climbers, they need something to climb on. Fences, a trellis are good for this. Are you feeding them? Get a bag of rose food and feed them once a month from late April to early September in my region, just follow the directions on the bag. Do you deadhead the old blooms? The rule of thumb is to cut them back to the branch where you have 5 leaves.

There’s a specific food called Rose Tone made by Espoma that always seemed to do pretty well with them. Give it a shot. And you’d need a trellis or something for them to climb up, don’t know if you have one already.

Definitely need a trellis or support of some kind for the climbers. If it’s blooming heavy, that’s a good sign.

I don’t have any useful information to contribute… but I am mexican, so I felt obligated to post in here.

Hai Lawson!

All I know about roses is when I fertilize mine they immediately start blooming profusely.

Fertilize once a month, spray with miracle grow once a week, spray for blackspot every two weeks, deadhead often, buy roses that work well in your area.

I’m not familiar with the rose you mention, but someone at your local nursery probably is. NOT your local Home depot. Also…maybe contact someone at your local university/community college. Lots of smart people there that are familiar with your area.

Hey karma, your join date says 2010 but you look a lot like someone named karma who used to post here for a long time. Didn’t I see you in vegas a few years back? Anyways, if it’s a different person, welcome, if it’s the same karma, welcome back, long time no see.

That is some very good stuff. Makes the leaves nice and shiny and the blooms very bright.

So, assuming that there is something for them to climb, you may have to take the stems and prop them up where you would like them to grow, then tie them loosely to the structure with some gardening wire (green coating).

Veggie! Hey there! Yep, it’s me… Been so long I forgot the whole log in/email/password crap. Mods said they’re trying to fix it. I think we met on the bridge between the MGM and Excalibur… I have a vague recollection of it (BF at the time just didn’t get it).

Ok guys, thanks for the help. I have the damn thing in a raised bed (did all the soil amendments and crap according to the local nursery folk) and it’s against a chicken wire fence covering a wood fence. This was supposed to give it the support it needs BUT it’s not a vining climber like my clematis or the morning glories. I use twist ties to tie it to the chicken wire where the canes are large enough, but the blooms come 6 to a stem and the stems are so tiny that the whole head of the bloom bends over. I can’t possibly twist tie every head to the fence.

Thanks for the fertilizer advice. I’ve Miracle Grow’d but didn’t think about special rose food. Maybe they’re just too hungry to stand up straight!

This is it’s second year and the first time it’s bloomed so I have no clue what to do with it.

Oh, they’re just young then. You can lighten them up a little by removing the lower blooms from each main stem, so that they aren’t too crowded and bush like. This will help with air circulation too, which is important in preventing black spot. Always remove all the clippings.

They will take a few years to really develop into a full and mature piece of the landscape.

That is so cool.

Haha no I think I made a post saying I’d be in vegas if anyone from the area could steer me to some good spots and Ms Karma said she was also going to be in the area. We exchanges cellular numbers and texted our positions a few times and ended up meeting up to say hi in person.

It wasn’t quite as accidental as that, but yeah, it was cool. Awww… back in the day when T-maggers would bother traveling to meet up with others. I think we both just realized we’d be in Vegas at the same time and voila!

At one time we actually had a Denver T-Cell - not that anyone but me ever showed up to the field days.

Damn, hijacked my own thread.

SkyzykS: I like the idea of thinning the clusters a little and giving them some more breathing room. They’re dense! The fact that they’re young also make sense as to why they’re not “firm”. I’ll just be patient and try to let the buggers get a few more years under their roots. Thanks a lot!

Sorry for the Hi-Jack.

One thing I know abouut plants is that roots and stems respond better to a higher nitrogen mixed fertilizer and Flowers and fruits respond to a heavier Phosporus mix. I think You could go with something a little stronger on the nitrogen end to help the plant develop a robust root and stem structure and then switch it over to a phosphorus heavy one next year.

Technically, when I did my veggies, I would do spring and early summer with high nitrogen food, and then when the plants were mature and ready to bear fruit, pop them over to a high Phosphorus food, and they would just blow up with fruits. You might be better off focusing on a full year of nitrogen rich food to get them well established since they are perrenials.

For a little more in depth look at it.

And what thread would be worthwhile without pics? lol… The droopy Blaze
