Who Grows a Fruit/Veg Garden?

What ever happened to growing stuff people liked?

No worries. It’s coming. The nights have just been a little too cold for them to germinate quickly. A few tomatoes made an appearance this morning. I am working on a germination chamber as we speak.

We just got an other 6" of snow and more coming this week end. Maybe next week, I will start a few plants in the house

I have never germinated seeds in advance, since summer here is like 48 weeks long…lol.

But thinking of doing it, because l am planning only small gardening this year. Will also not be doing any peas or beans, as l am in good supply.

That said, people are already setting onions and planting early leafy greens.

We’re in the longest hard cold spell I recall down here in E Texas. Glad l have been too lazy to plant anything yet - haha.

About to go feed cows/bust pond ice at 3 places in -8 chill this am though…

This is what the greenhouse looked like last Monday morning.

Before the storm hit I bought a heavyish tarp to help hold some of the heat in. It covered at half to three quarters.

Power was off and on the first couple days then off on the coldest three days. I didn’t have room to bring all the plants in the house so I stuck most of them in my make shift germination chamber. Which is made from recycled packing materials from a friend’s bathroom remodel, a dog crate from another friend, and an old blanket. When we lost power I lit an old oil lamp and put it in there for heat. They were not warm but it was enough to keep them from freezing, so it got the job done.

They are a little leggy from lack of sunlight but should straighten themselves up just fine.

I am going with a 75-80% survival rate and all things considered… I am good with that!

This is super impressive CL, you’re a pro!

Thanks! But, I’m no pro. Just a poor old hillbilly having fun.

Uhh, my wife and I could barely handle a single garden box, so there’s no convincing me you’re not a pro, but I respect the humility.

I forgot to post my new garden toys I got before snovid21 hit.

A corn knife and a Korean hand hoe. ( easy now, it’s just a garden implement) Haven’t got use them much but what little I have, I really like both!

Really good, i hope i will make something like that when i can, do u have also animals ?

Thanks, I hope you can someday. No, the only animals I have are an old dog and some feral cats. I do plan on getting some more chickens and ducks this year though.

Yes good Idea, how much did u have (space) ?

Did u do something like permaculture ?

Not enough, or I would have bought that milk cow…lol

Permaculture is strong word. I prefer to think of it as just doing things the old fashioned way.

Started eight more trays of seeds yesterday.
Sweet banana peppers, habaneros, all season cabbage, basil, marigolds, petunias Oregano and dill in pots, swiss chard and two rows of beets in the garden.

The sugar snap peas are popping up. Glad they had enough sense to stay underground while it was cold.

Today’s excitement. We have grass! I cleared the path to the green house and found some green grass inside.
