I wish people would’ve been this frank and open about Heath Ledger being a drug addict and not a ‘tortured artist’ when he died, but I forgot he’s white so it’s completely different.
Let me get this right then;
So the respective media treatment of Whitney and Heath were driven by race?
Last I checked Whitney was derided by the black community for being a crack-head and the butt of jokes about herself and Bobby.
Crack also does not have a “race” and the fact is, crack is associated with more societal ills than pills and such, although that is changing given that pill (painkiller and such) addiction is rising dramatically along with the crime that comes with it.
Whitney was also a cross-over artist that I believe, quite frankly, was treated fairly gently by the media given her troubles.
It wasn’t a serious comment, just a jab at the media and trying to be funny. Don’t disagree with anything you said, but I still think it was weird when people said Heath Ledger lost his mind while shooting The Dark Knight because he was such a committed actor, he overdosed becaue he was a drug addict, I thought the media was reaching for a story on that one, that’s all.
Not looking for this to become a debate, I agree with both you and Christine, I have a weird sense of humor, and I was drunk when I posted that. Haha
understood and agreed
however, I never agree with Christine on principal so I will have to reconsider my position in this matter.

I caught the last half hour of the Grammys last night. Of course they memorialized Whitney, along with a list of others in the music biz who died this past year.
However, THEY FUCKIN’ MISSED THE GREAT ETTA JAMES!
Seriously?
I didn’t watch, but really no excuse for missing Etta James. She just died too.
Inexcusable.
Okay, now I feel like a dick. I didn’t see the whole show, so I just Googled it… and behold! AT some pint in the show, Bonnie Raitt and Alicia Keys did a tribute to the great Ms James.

I think these kind of “retorts” when celebs die( and not-so-surprisingly get media attention) disrespect those who died for our country, imo.

I agree with you.
I think it puts things in better perspective.
I am the daughter of a Viet Nam vet that was in Lebanon, the Bay of Pigs,3 tours of Viet Nam, Lebanon and special assignment to South America. I absolutely know he is an American hero. At least to me.
fuck Whitney the drug addict.

Perspective…you said it yourself. Who’s arguing her as an American hero?? Second…why did your and MY relatives fight and serve this country?? For what rights?? What makes our country worth the sacrifices??
Why all the crying over the passing of a crack head? Sure she was a inspiration diva at one point but clearly a shadow of her former self. The wise thing to do is learn the lesson that healthy well adjusted adults don’t do drugs and move on. You can enjoy her life story and music; I most certainly do but there’s no need to feel compassion for her unbridled drug use that killed her
Maybe will get some snow in Wisconsin this winter now that that coke head is dead : P

Huh? Who hasn’t been honoring our fallen heroes? Almost every week during the fighting I saw the news naming another fallen soldier in the middle east.
Blame the media for Whitney’s coverage, but remember the Bush administration downplayed reports about soldiers’ deaths and prohibited the release of flag-draped coffin photographs during the Iraq invasion. This included the return of wounded soldiers to Dover Air Force Base for after midnight so that the press would not see them.
Sorry the PWI rant.

Why all the fuss if she wasn’t that significant of a human being?? The same “advice” you give is what people are being criticized for. AND who are you to tell anyone what they should…and should not feel “compassion” for??

You’re right, Wol. It’s late, I’m cranky and should be in bed. It’s squat day tomorrow.

The news loves this kind of shit. How many people did you talk about Whitney for hours on end about since Saturday? I’m guessing none. The most time I spent on the topic was a brief conversation during the grammys, a short article I read, and this thread. I’m not telling you what you should or should not feel compassion for, I’m just stating that wasting your time thinking about long time crack heads who you don’t really know that die of overdose might not be the best way to spend your time. Rather take in the lesson that happy, well adjusted adults don’t do drugs and move on

Ummm…ok?? As if already “happy,well-adjusted” adults needed Whitney’s passing to “grow up.”
LOL @ the drivel about “time wasted” on the GAL forum. Irony…funny.
Whats wrong with trying to spread my memes? I didn’t say people needed this to “grow up”, you just taking it that way. Learning life lessons aren’t just for children and young adults, they are part of constantly improving your life by adding wisdom and insight. After all the only thing in your life that really mattered once you have died is all this knowledge you gained during and proceeded to pass on to others
Constant improvement with life lessons requires things that are lacking in this very thread.
