There is infinitely more money and prestige in the NFL and NBA than the NHL.
So much so, that a fair argument can be made that there are very low numbers of American black HW boxers of high skill, in comparison to the past, due to the ever increasing riches of the NBA and NFL. This despite HW boxing offering a potentially huge amount of money.

I will offer one more counter: The MLB. Major League Baseball has no salary cap for their teams. In essence, this means that more money could be made in the MLB than in either the NBA or NFL for a star caliber player. However, I would posit that the MLB is the most diverse of all professional level sports in the US. Plenty of white, African American, Latino, and Japanese star players.
There are baseball fields in almost everytown in America so access is not an issue, nor is equipment (basic equipment is cheap and sold at WalMart).
So, following your logic that it is mostly money being chased and therefore the more athletic among us are following that route, why haven’t all the MLB teams filled their rosters with exclusively African Americans?

Over time, the NBA and NFL become more culturally resonant with blacks, due to the high concentration of black players and as more and more black players become successful.
Furthermore, both football and basketball offer the chance of educational success, through the huge interest in these sports at the college level. Something that would appeal to poor families, regardless of if a professional career is subsequently obtained.
This is a further reason for these sports becoming more popular in black communities, than sports such as NHL and baseball.
