@TheCB I can’t say I’ve hung on to every word of the hundreds of posts this thread’s generated in the last couple of days, but you certainly managed to post a lot of facts. I’m not here to dispute those facts, but to challenge you to consider what it is you’re trying to achieve and ask you a question.
Do you think your tone and choice of words will be compelling to many readers?
Somalia has come up repeatedly across this thread. Well, I probably know more people of Somalian birth and heritage than everyone else in the rest of the thread combined. That doesn’t make me an expert on Somalia, it just makes me a guy who may have more insight than others posting here.
My kid graduated high school this year in a class of around 350 that was about 40 percent Somali/Bantu. He’s had a lot of problems with Somalians at school, but I’m sure he had a hand in creating plenty of those problems too. Hockey studs in hockey towns have a way of letting that get to their head, and he wasn’t immune to the jerk behavior you sometimes see from people at the top of the teenage social hierarchy. I was honestly appalled at the behavior of the Somalian crowd during his graduation when the national anthem played. It was constant chatter, people milling about and generally not behaving the way we expect people to behave during the anthem.
Is that disdain for our country showing? Maybe. Is that a product of coddling educators who’ve failed to instill an appropriate level of reverence for what that moment means to so many people? I’d say it almost certainly is.
My town is currently entering the second generation of East African immigrants. This has not been without problems and came at great taxpayer expense, but none of the dire predictions of terror attacks and widespread violence that is commonplace in Somalia has come to pass in the last decade plus. Our crime remains quite low. Yes, it is higher than most towns in Maine, the most peaceful state in the US, but it is very low compared to most American cities of similar size. Much of that is due to out-of-state gangs who are not Somalians coming here to compete for and supply the ever-increasing demand for drugs that our population has.
We have a lot of Somalians who are flourishing. I think more would flourish in the long run if we eliminated many of the taxpayer funded benefits, but that’s another discussion. The point is that they are clearly not seeking to make my city into a carbon copy of Somalia. This is borne out in over 10 years of peaceful co-existence and a steady trajectory of increased levels of success among our neighbors from a distant land.
I’ve found many of the Somalian children I’ve interacted with to be extraordinarily polite and well-behaved. They all speak English, unlike their parents. Some of the highest academic achievers in my kid’s class were Somalian. Our soccer team is among the best in the country, and those kids are all on the path to success.
Would I welcome more Somalians who wanted to come here without the caveat of generous long-term taxpayer-funded benefits? Absolutely. It is abundantly clear that they are achieving and contributing far more than they ever could have in Somalia.
Finally, I would recommend reading Guns, Germs and Steel. It goes into a lot of detail about how simple circumstances like geography, climate and resource availability combine to shape outcomes for different populations.

That(whoever brought up Somalians and low IQ) was stupid to bring up. Everyone knows Somalians have low IQs because of lack of government. Was much higher, along with quality of life, prior to 1991.

I can’t. I made that up(to the best of my knowledge). I was just surprised to see Somalia brought up for any reason other than the lack of government that took it from paradise-on-earth in 1991 to its current(well, prior to reestablishment of a central State) state.

So let’s talk about you individually. Can you please share a list of your inventions? And can we at least get back to therapy talk? I’m guessing work/social life might be areas you’re struggling in. Maybe therapy can help. It’s almost like you don’t even want to discuss seeing if you can improve your own life.
We just have to forget Somalia for one second. Thought replacement is a part of therapy so we can start here without the need for professionals. I’m ready to discuss when you are.

I have known some Somalians in my time too, and also enjoyed their company.
My point with them (and others) is along the lines of (i’ll make this broader to include all immigrants):
- why should Americans accept them?
- what (if there is one) is the limit to numbers?
- should all nationalities be accepted in equal amounts?
- what is inherently wrong with wanting a nation to remain of a similar genetic and racial make up?
- is this only a white issue or can unlimited amounts of eg muslim Ethiopians move into Israel? Why (if it is) is that different?
I’m not asking you to justify any of this to me, I’m using these questions to illustrate some of my thinking on these topics.

The whole Somali IQ issue is interesting. It’s based on research by someone who admitted he never gave an actual IQ test to any Somalians. His other IQ averages for other African nations are also flawed. But this 68 IQ number has become a favorite stat for white supremacists and racists to throw out. Since TheCB has not read the book which quotes these IQ scores and explains the methodology behind them, he must have gotten these stats from racist websites.
So you’re saying people have value despite I.Q. rates? Good because maybe we can move on from whatever horrific point you were trying to make. Also it’s likely many people with a different skin color than you have a higher IQ. Seems like a pretty fucking dumb thing to use to assign value to people agreed?
For the same reasons we have always accepted immigrants. The benefits they bring. It’s not all positive but I think you’d be hard pressed to say we would be where we are if we stopped immigration in 1776. Most of us wouldn’t be here. We wouldn’t be nearly as large nor as powerful and we would be looking at an entirely different country and world.

Who are you trying to exclude and why? Tell me why if a smart young person from India goes to college here it’s a bad thing. It could be a doctor that saves your life.

I think you should. Aside from being an interesting and entertaining read, I think you will find the insight it offers very useful and pertinent to the facts you have posted.
I won’t lie. I don’t particularly enjoy the company of most Somalians I’ve met. I know a few cool cats from my time as a part-time bouncer, but it turns out that I don’t have much in common with most Muslims from a distant land. That’s fine, since I don’t have much in common with the French Canadian population base either. I actually don’t like the company of most people, and I’m more than okay with that too. This is what tolerance really means. We can all go about our lives, curse each other silently and just make sure that we don’t bother each other. It’s really not that hard.
Because we should accept anyone who wants to come here and try to make their own way. We have a long track record of success to back this notion up. The USA has been scraping the bottom of the barrel for a long time.
I support few limits on legal immigration if done through the proper channels. Tying immigration to costly long-term, taxpayer-funded benefits fundamentally changes the discussion, especially when also tied to immigrants entering the country illegally.

Nothing, if that’s what the nation wants. I completely support my grandparents’ birth land of Poland to their right of self-determination. If anyone’s earned the right to stake out their own land in Europe, it’s the Polish.
