Before I do above, I remember about 20 years ago a Canadian First Nations university lecturer came up with an explanation for how Europeans came to be so dominant in the world. It is basically as such:
Europe was connected enough with the rest of the old world for ideas and food sources that could be domesticated to reach it, but still have some degree of separation so that disease waves only happened so often, and it was demanding to invade them too much.
The Mediterranean, which provided for the above, was just the right size and configuration such that the sailing conditions weren’t like the north Atlantic, and gave the opportunity for trade, and some separation.
Europe is also in a climate zone such that tropical diseases don’t impede progress, and crop pests are limited.
Western Europe was running out of real estate, not such the case with any part of Africa, and the people’s of Europe yearned for somewhere else to prosper. Eventually someone was sufficiently not flat Earthist to actually cross the ocean. With nautical engineering technology borrowed from Arabs.
When the Europeans came over, they had steel, likely invented where? I forget, someone post it, horses that were first domesticated by the central and east Asians and gunpowder the Chinese invented. Yes, it took a European to come up with the gun principle, but still.
Even thought the Europeans weren’t Malaria addled, they had some anti bodies to Bubonic Plague and Small Pox. the first nations were devastated massively, and that is a lot of how the west was won.

Yes, and both the Spanish (Columbus) and the Portuguese (Cabral) stumbled into the Americas while sailing for India.
Also, their martial prowess displayed against Aztecs, Incas and real Indians was due to steel and hundreds of years of constant warfare against Muslims in Spain and North Africa.

Nope. Actually it’s a story I’ve been fascinated with. While Moctezuma II was killed in unclear circumstances, Cortez wanted to co opt the Aztec royalty into Spanish nobility and the plan actually often worked - as a consequence, Moctezuma’s descendants are alive and well and still own castles and properties in Spain.
The moral of the story is - if you’re very rich, it’s more likely that your descendants will survive an apocalyptic event like the Spanish conquest of Mexico.
