With thousands upon thousands of miles of coastline looking out to the Atlantic, why did no Africans build some boats, set sail and conquer America?
Why didn’t the Romans, Greeks, Phoenicians, Chinese, Egyptians, Japanese, Mongols, Arabs…?

Why should they? People didn’t sail into uncharted waters just out of curiosity, They sailed for…wait for it…profit. And for Africans, money was in the east - India and China (see map above).
The Spanish and the Portuguese never planned to “discover” anything. They were driven by a desire for profit and religious fervor - to find a maritime route to India, become fabulously rich and in turn starve the Ottoman middlemen in the spice trade of funds, ally themselves with mythical Christian kingdoms in the East and destroy Islam.

The Polynesians sailed the vastness of the Pacific without compasses and vague maps made of sticks that detailed the relative positions of different island destinations.
The Arab world invented the dhow sailing vessel with a clinker built board pattern and also they invented the lateen sail, that was better suited for tacking into the wind so that they could sail other than just dead downwind.
My understanding is that the islamic world set up a caliphate in the southern Philippines hundreds of years before Magellan ever saw the place. The indigenous peoples were already there, as in the western hemisphere.

When Vasco da Gama “discovered” a trade route to India and landed in Calicut, Arab traders were cursing him in Spanish from the shore.
I have read someplace that during the European medieval times there were great gold riches in west Africa and there was an empire based around Mali.
