Whiplash : Getting Jacked to be the Scary Dad

Aaalllrrrriiiiiggghhhttttyyy then….

Here’s my write up for my race. I woke up at 530, put down a couple cups of water and then some coffee and my breakfast which I had prepped last night. Did some really good warm ups and stretching…but I should have stretched my ankles…more on that later lol.

The weather was perfect for me for racing…about 15 celcius and overcast. I found out on site that it was 34 obstacles, and 7.3kms officially. Unfortunately I started out a little too quick, and realized pretty quick that I couldn’t hold that pace. I mean…my last race was 7 years ago I believe.

There were many events that were very ninja warrior-esque and it was very challenging…I have never done this one before so I wasn’t sure what I was coming into but I can safely say it was the most challenging obstacle race I have ever done. I had more than enough strength to get through the events, especially in my upper body, but unfortunately I had a few slip ups.

There was two events I knew I would fail…the axe throw and the spear throw. So I had to do exercise punishments for that which was 10-10-10 burpees push-ups and sit-ups. There where three other events that again I had plenty of strength for, and got through them but unfortunately on all three of them I managed to slip right at the end and missed the bell. Obviously I was frustrating myself with that lol, cause I got through them right up until I had to hit the bell…so I had a total of 5 punishments lol.

There where 3 really brutal hills to climb as well, and stuff like tire flips, log carries, and so on. For the most part I did well getting through the events, and there were a few that to my sadistic mind I found really fun. One of my favorite moments was on one of the climbing events I was hanging one handed. The warped wall at the end was awesome too.

However…I did manage to sprain my ankle for one thing…on the rope climb I got up no problem but when I dropped down I landed funny and sprained it…but I dealt with it and kept going. Not sure if that really slowed me down too much but it’s still worth mentioning. Also on one of those events I slipped on…that was my own stupidity to be honest. It was swinging monkey bars and I had been skipping a bar at a time, but when I got to the end I went for two, missed and fell onto the cement which definitely hurt too lol. I had landed on my side.

Anyways the only complaint I would have all in all is that there was two spots where me and a couple others missed the turnoff signs and got a tad lost…so I lost some time with that.

And please don’t take any of that as excuses…I’m just saying what happened. But all in all it was honestly the most challenging obstacle race I have ever done and I am definitely doing it again. I don’t have my official time yet but I finished in roughly an hour and half and I will post some pictures later. It was a lot of fun, and really good personal challenge. I think that my favorite event of all was the tire drag…it was tractor tire with a rope, and you did a seated arm over arm thing, and then you have to drag it back to the start position again and it was in a sand pit. But overall the whole thing was really well done and there was lots of support.

Awesome man! Thanks for taking the time to write it up, sounds like a good time in my book! Hope that ankle isn’t too nasty

Yeah it definitely was a good time. And even mentally I think I needed the challenge. Thanks for reading :grinning:

I didn’t plan on doing any sort of a workout today but…

10x10 45 degree hyperextension back raise
5 sets weighted 5sets body weight

As I was scrolling face book market place this morning, I came across an oldish school soozier hyperextension bench for 40 bucks. It’s not a bad angle but it’s not the best either, but it’s solid and clean and it was cheap. Been wanting something like this for a long time as it is so it’s a nice horse to add to the stable.

Also…I am sore all over from the race yesterday so maybe, just maybe the back raises will help a tiny bit lol.

The past little bit I have been lost with training and dieting and what not. I have had so much going on with my life and change after change…but that race was something I needed to get my head straightened out a bit and figure out what I ultimately want. I’m calling my goal or my ideal “Be Unbreakable”. In some ways it’s similar to Brian Alsruhe’s (Aka alpha) be dangerous. For me, the training can and will vary as needed and a big part of that will have to do with the equipment I have available to me.

There is a new gym being built in town here, and if it’s cheap enough I’ll absolutely join…but for the time being I’m training at home with what I have and whatever I end up adding. If that gym isn’t cheap enough, I plan on getting some weight plate concrete molds and making my own plates along with getting some very specific pieces. I have been doing a lot of research to see what I could put together on a budget and I have a good idea on what I will do depending on what that gym turns out to be.

Anyways…the goal with being Unbreakable is largely to get stronger and build up work capacity/conditioning. Obviously my physique is something I think about as well, but I want to be physically capable…dangerous(so to speak)…Unbreakable. I want to get back into competing even in just a general way, and I want to be at least somewhat functional. For now, with what I have at home, my workouts will probably follow a similar pattern to above but varying exercises, reps, rest times and so on. If I get into that gym then I’m gonna think about running someone’s program for a bit…and if I have to build something at home then we will see how it goes.

I also intend to start posting more regularly too. I have been sort of lost in a lot of ways since my marriage ended and I need to get straightened out. Anyways…that’s all for now.

I have been feeling off the past fourish days…not sure why exactly cause I don’t really feel sick…I just don’t really feel right. Haven’t had much appetite and sleep has been shittier than normal. Haven’t really trained the past few days either. Hopefully I can get myself back on track here right away.

Otherwise…so for the past while the gym equipment I do have has been in my basement. Well…spread out between upstairs and my basement. My chin-up bar and resistance bands are upstairs and my other stuff is downstairs. But I’m gonna move my shit out to the garage hopefully this weekend. I need somewhere to go and I want to have all my stuff in one spot if that makes sense. I’m hoping to get my hands on those plate molds I mentioned fairly soon here…hopefully a cheapish bench will come after that and I have been watching marketplace for deals too. I’d love to get my hands on a heavy bag (pun intended) as well. We’ll see how it goes as it comes.

Boxing or strongman kind? If the former, do you have a way to hang it?

Boxing is what I had in mind. I boxed a little in my 20’s and would love to do a little bit again. And it’s a good way to get some conditioning in. The beams in my garage are all exposed so I could easily hang it.

Fantastic exercise. I ended up getting a Bas Rutten “Body Action System” over a traditional hanging bag in order to keep from shaking my whole house when I wanted to get in a workout in the basement, although I don’t use it nearly enough these days.

Fair enough, and that makes sense. I think being able to throw that in the mix a couple times a week or maybe more depending on how it goes would be a nice addition.

I got in some non-exercise exercise last night…so my son already is showing how much he’s like me…he loves to compete. And honestly he is a very high energy kid so I figured to help burn off some energy and to hopefully as well build a stronger bond with him, I slightly did things differently last night. I took him for a bike ride (I walk and he bikes most of the time) but I kept saying to him “let’s race to that spot” and what not. He loved it, and it got me jogging. Then when I took him to the park after, I was saying things like “I bet I can get up there faster than you”…I wasn’t exactly racing him cause I wanted him to win but it did slightly bring up the intensity of play time. And it’s a lot more movement than some of the other parents do at the park….no judgement, just observation. And then I got him competing with me for how long we could hang off the monkey bars. Adds in a tad more non-exercise movement and again he loved it. I do want to promote an active lifestyle to him, and I believe competition can be a good thing a lot of times too. I already have him doing push-ups and kb deadlifts (15lbs) too. It’s not like he’s doing reps and sets…I’m treating it more like fun and a game. He actually asks to do deadlifts sometimes too which is pretty funny. But anyways…I don’t think that the little bit of extra non-exercise movement will really do much for me physically…but if i can use it to benefit my son…that’s the win right there.

Dude, that is absolutely fantastic! Building these physical habits in a young boy is so huge, and you’re out there setting a fantastic example as a physical role model and a man for him.

A game I like to play is to get one of those nerf footballs that’s designed to be thrown super far.

Take it out, chuck it, and then you both race to it to see who can get there first. Gets you some throwing in. You can give your kid a scooter/bike if you really wanna challenge yourself/even the playing field.

If you have winters: pulling your kid in a sled is a treat for them and a workout for you. You can also push them on a prowler, which is a delight, haha.

I got my kiddo some nunchucks with foam padding and we have some sessions of that too. Honestly, kids are just awesome, and STARVING for parent attention. If you can play/wrestle/rough house/BE with them, you’re doing awesome.

Oh man…I love the idea of the throwing game…I never thought of that before, thanks. We do wrestle already too and that’s been a lot of fun. Last summer I tried to get him to sit on my workout sled but I think he was a tad too little cause he didn’t really want to stay on it. And we do have winters so I’ll definitely be keeping the other sled in mind
