I may meet you on the road then, 'cause I plan to do the exact same thing this summer. Pick a highway, ride 'til you drop or have to change direction. Nothing beats the road for a solo trip.

Fiji, baby!

it was SHIT.
if i go on a holiday on my own again, i would go on a fishing holiday.
maybe norway, maybe russia.
i dont like talking when im fishing so it would suit me fine.
but i would NEVER go on a socialising sort of holiday on my own. they’re shit, and the hippies you meet in hostels are a pack of fags that zip their bags all night.
bag zippin hippies[/quote]
I hate those cnuts[sic].
Last time I had the chance to take a couple of months off I packed the tent on the motorcycle and spent a few weeks in Alaska and the Yukon. Not really much of an adventure anymore but if you get a bit off the beaten path it’s still quite a trip. I’ve been thinking about doing the same sort of thing again but either to Panama or across Russia and Europe. Maybe someday.

I am riding the bike to Key West this May for my buddy’s wedding. I could fly to Miami and rent a car, but I figure it is an excuse to put some miles on the bike and see parts of the country that I have not been to in a long time. Expecting to spend some time in Nashville, Tallahassee, Tampa, Miami and the Keys. Should be a nice time.
I would also consider elk hunting in the mountains or bird hunting my way across the Dakotas with my dog excellent solo adventures.
I should have stated my starting point. I am in Iraq, and because of tax laws, I can’t come into the US until October.
I am really wanting somewhere I can relax, hand around with the fairer gender, get daily massages, legit or otherwise…
Dubai is OK for a few days only

I’ll wave so you know it is me.
Curacao
Rome and Venice are great cities, and easy to take public transportation to get around. The first time I went alone, I flew from Boston to Rome, stayed 3 nights in a hotel, took the train to Venice, three nights there, then flew back to Boston. It was a package deal on Expedia. Total cost, including hotel, airfare, taxes and train pass: $1,050.
The next time I went to Rome (alone again) but stayed with relatives of a friend who speak only Italian and Albanian. Ate the best food every day, bought a 7 day Multipass for I think $37. Euro, and the plane ticket was only $550. roundtrip from Boston.

I plan on going across the US someday. So much history to see.
I wouldn’t feel safe bringing my wife, but I always wanted to spend a few months(or years…) in Rio training jiujitsu. Few months in Thailand training Muay Thai would be great too.
I would love to know how you guys do it, especially a few months straight. Getting two straight weeks off for me is pretty much monumental. Maybe when I retire…
Muscle Beach.
Even if its just to pay homage.

Couldn’t agree more. This summer, I’m taking my tent and fishing gear and going to the mountains.
Dickbag; if you’re going to Norway and need tips on where to go, I’d be happy to help.

Anywhere to a singles Club Med, you won’t regret it. It is one continual party!
For those who’ve gone cross-country: Can you suggest some great routes for scenery?
The next time I have to do it I’d rather avoid the 4-6 lane highways.
Thanks.

When I went across (1997) I backed my rear wheel in the Atlantic at Neptune beach in Jacksonville then rode along the gulf coast to Dallas then strait north to Nebraska (home) then I-80 west through Colorado Utah then south to Vegas ended my trip in San Diego on some pier. I had 30 days leave and another 14 days change of station travel so I took a lot of back roads but usually paralleled the interstates for gas and stuff.
You cant beat Colorado, Utah and Nevada had the best scenery but try not to do it mid days in Late August, hot as hell sun burned the crap out of myself

There is indeed a lot of great stuff to see out there and I did leave intending to see great sights but a few weeks in I found that the characters I ran across on the road had become more interesting than even the most majestic scenery. That will make little sense until you begin to experience it.
Finding the time wasn’t particularly difficult for me. I was just winding up my involvement in a startup and had simultaneously finished grad school so it was: find a new gig, take the bar exam then find a new gig, or travel. Easy choice that. ![]()
