What's With Calling People 'Coach'?

What is with the need for people to call trainers/managers/football coaches “Coach” all the time? I hear this used on ESPN about 1000 times a day and even see it used when people are asking CT questions? I coached an under 12 soccer team about 6 years ago. Does this mean I can now refer to myself as Coach? Is there a degree one must undertake which earns them the title of Coach? Does this mean that I need to call my plumber Dave Smith “Plumber” Smith?

Would you refer to yourself as “Coach”? If you always speak in the third person, then I’d say go for it.

I’d love to hear coaches do this more often in post game press conferences. Coach Singletary is happy we got the win today, but Coach Singletary thinks our offensive line needs to do a better job. Coach Singletary is done answering questions about the game.

It is a sign of respect. A coach is someone that facilitates a person reaching their potential. A “teacher” says, “I know stuff and my job is to get you to know the stuff I know.” A “coach” says, “My job is to help you be the best you can be. That might be my equal, or even better than me, but I don’t care because its not about me…its about you.”

well in my case i still call my old h.s. coach by coach. even 30 yrs later, just respect i guess

So do I.
Every coach I’ve ever had will always be called coach.
Its like your parents. They will always be mom or dad.

Nice thread, champ.

.

This thread is what I thought it was.

hahaha ID.

As a player I can’t think of anything else I would have called my coach. Just his last name or just the first name would be pretty disrespectful. Saying Mr. Sparks would have sounded stupid. I like Coach Sparks or just Coach

Usually if someone is educating you they deserve some sort of title that denotes respect.

In the Bible, Christ’s followers called him Teacher, or Rabbi… and Jesus didn’t even have degrees or certification!

lol

LOL at the notion of the disciples calling Jesus coach

The only man I call “Coach” is the man currently coaching ME. Never people who coach others.

And I let it off the hook.

Why do you give a shit?

Surely we can’t compare football coaches to Jesus. Obviously this question has struck a nerve or two. I’ll just leave it be.

Jesus did run a great football team. Too bad the twelfth man decided to play for the other team.
