What's the Deal with Dairy?!?!

i eat a pretty good amount of cottage cheese, especially my first meal post workout, and before bed. Is it bad though? should i change this? Isn’t this what berardi suggests? My wrestling coach also told me to stay away from cottage cheese because he said it would add extra weight, but i got pretty damn ripped eating a decent amount of it.
another question, y is plain yogurt good, and whyis say vanilla yogurt bad, im sure there is some ingredient diffrences, but on the back of the package protien and carbs matchup.
Thanx

No cottage cheese, but protein powder is ok?

What I understand from the nutrition experts is that dairy is bad for you, but whey and caisine based protein powder is not because the protein powder is the protein molecule from dairy, not “dairy” itself. The point is to avoid dairy which comes from hormone injected cows that are fed a diet spiked with antibiotics and synthetics, and then their milk is pasteurized among other processes which produces an end product you don’t want to put in your body. I’m told that if you had a healthy cow on a healthy diet and drank the cow’s raw milk you would have good, healthy food. I have eaten tons of dairy in the past and stayed very healthy as far as I could tell. I have depended on milk (once drank a gallon a day), cottage cheese, and yogurt and made good progress gaining muscle. Now, based on my new edjewkashun, I have decided the best choice is to cut the dairy (with the exception of a rare ice cream treat and such). After a few months off dairy now I like it. I think I get lean easier. Maybe in the future someone will reveal to me that what I have substituted in place of dairy is as bad or worse than dairy…Oh well… Also, I heard of a website, www.notmilk.com, that supposedly has a lot of research available about dairy being bad. I have not had the time to dig into the stuff on this site, so I don’t know.

Well i dont use protien powders so i dont gotta worry bout that now do i. i try to stay as natural as possible.

when asked about the most estrogenic foods guess what Doc serrano said-- milk and soy. Mercola didnt have good things to say about milk either. i have kept cheese and cottage in my diet, but cut milk out

Worrying too much about milk sugars halting fat loss because they top up liver glycogen seems illogical if you are on a fat loss nutrition plan, as the slight reduction in calories will mean that you are always going to have lower glycogen stores due to your calorie deficiet. if you are training hard and frequently (which you should be during a cutting phase to create the extra calorie deficiet) you need in the region of 6 -10 grams of carbs per kilogram of body weight to keep glycogen stores fully topped up and I know that during a diet phase that just isn’t going to happen.
The reason I feel milk would happer fat loss is due to its high II (insulin index) because of its carbs and specific amino acids creating a high insulinotropic response. semi skimmed and full fat would probably be a worse choice because of the high blood insulin levels and high triglyceride levels casuing greater lipogenosis.
As for people telling you to cut out whole food groups (i.e. all diary not just milk) seems irresponsible to me due to the potential for certain deficiencies.
personally during a diet phase I would just reduce certain foods (not totally cut them out) and try to limit any potential problems they may present by just making sure The timing was right for the foods.

Great thoughts on the subject, and I appreciate the input. At 66.82kg BW, 20kg BF, I’m taking in 100g of carbs per day. I work out with weights approximately 5 days a week (90 minutes) and do cardio @ about 85-90% of max heart rate for 30 minutes 5+ days a week. My energy levels are high, so 100g of carbs seems to be the magic number for me in a cutting phase. My thoughts on your observation about a requirement of 6-10g of carbs per kg of body weight is that it would be for LEAN BODY WEIGHT, not TOTAL BODY WEIGHT. The 20kg of BF I carry has no need for or ability to store glycogen. What say ye? Either way, I’m taking in far less carb grams than my body requires for the work I do. I take in some fruit and some dairy, though not much of either, and my concern has been that fruit sugar (fructose) and milk sugar (lactose) fill liver glycogen stores, but not muscle glycogen stores. I don’t remember the numbers/percentages, but my memory is that the liver does not hold much glycogen at all, whereas the muscles hold the majority of glycogen stores in the body. I would be very much interested in your thoughts on the subject. Thank you for your thoughts thus far.

Honestly, I don’t think that you can do a whole lot of harm with a little fructose and galactose if your carb intake is only at 100 per day. If the cottage cheese does worry you, however, I would recommend picking up some calcium caseinate or milk protein isolate for your pre-bed meal. I take mine with a few fish oil softgels and 1 tbsp. ground flaxseeds (for fiber to slow digestion). I know I’ve seen the magic number of how much the liver can handle per day; I just can’t remember where:(

I think we all should just eat other humans.

joel dont you know how mad cow disease came to this magnitude

Thanks, Eric. You hit the nail on the head: The reason I’m reluctant to give up my cottage cheese is because casein is a slow digesting protein, and I take it before bed. But you’ve given me some great ideas. I like ground flaxseed and think I will try that with some Low-Carb Grow! before bed. Thanks for the reply.

Joel, you are just TOO funny!!!

Good Lord, every week there seems to be another post about someone’s fear of food. What do you people eat if you are avoiding all milk products, all supplements with any caffeine because of how “carb sensitive” you are, or anything else that has hit this week’s list of “Foods to Avoid”? I swear if I sat around worrying about every once of what-ever-the-hell that I put into my mouth, I never would have broken 200lbs. Either way, if you decide to avoid milk because it was “made for cows” that simply means there will be more for me and my muscles love you for it.

ProfessorX, you can have all the milk, as long as you leave the cows for me.
