Is it possible to touch your chest with the bar in the power rack and still have it set to catch the bar if you fail?
If you set the pins correctly they won’t catch unless you fail and then roll the bar to your neck and then slide off the side of the bench. This allows full range of motion.
If you don’t have a huge gut and have at least average upper body development you could also roll it to your stomach but rolling it to the neck is easier in my experience.
Atleast he just touched your bar. I was lifting with a friend of mine this guy had been “lifting” for about 3 years. Come to find out not so true his form sucks and its all just a bunch of half lifts. Anyway so I asked him for a spot thinking that he would know what to do. So I lift off and start.
On my upward press all of a sudden I’m not pressing, he’s lifting the whole thing. I stopped mid set put the bar back and ask what the hell he was doing. I told him what I wanted and the continued. But much to my dismay he did it again! After that point I really haven’t asked him to come to the gym with me again. Great guy, crappy lifter.
I HATE COCKSUCKERS LIKE THAT!!! They don’t understand that they may ruin 3 weeks of training if they give you a spot on a max attempt that wasn’t necessary. If there isn’t anybody in the gym that I trust I won’t let nobody spot me, instead I just stand up with the bar if I don’t make a rep.

When i spot people i dont touch shit. i ask how many they want, if they want a lift off, etc and let them go at it. even if theyre stuggling i wait a few seconds because i know that a lot of times when i struggle i still can get it up on my own even if it takes 15 seconds.
That’s why I hover over/under the bar; that way I don’t catch flak from people like you, but I can still back them up before it bounces off their chest/neck

oh yeah you think you got it bad…
not trying to hijack your thread…but today I was doing leg extensions and there was this fat chick on there before me who looked very orange…lol…
long story short i do my first set and look down at my shoes and legs where the pad touches and they had fake tanning lotion all over them, and the pad…
so i’m walking around with orange shins and shoes for the remainder of my workout…

…on your topic, i just hate to ask somebody for a spot in the first place, i’m thankful to have a few good training partners on days when i need a good spot.
I think it speaks volumes aboht the leg extension… a fat chick was doing it…

90% of people do not know how to lift.
99% of people do not know how to spot.
These are universal truths that I take everywhere.
If asked I always ask how the lifter likes to be spot. I am seldom asked.
Sad but true.
I too always ask the lifter how many reps they are going for, do they want any forced reps, do they want a lift off, etc…
I also always tell people exactly what I want from them if I ask for a spot, because like this thread has demonstrated, you never know how the person is going to spot you.
Even then, I try to only ask experienced people for spots, and usually try to do variations that don’t require spots (DB’s, Smith machine, HS, Power rack, etc…), that way I don’t have to rely on someone else or worry whether they are going to ruin my set or not.

I thought the “3 second rule” was pretty well established. I usually hover under the bar on the last reps but I never touch it unless the lift has obviously stalled. That should be easy enough to explain to a new spotter if you just make yourself clear.

Yeah I just got back and I was pissed off and needed to get it out. Its just when I told the guy not to touch it and he kept doin it, he wasnt listning and it pissed me off. I just figured if he was doing advanced ass exercises he should have known better.

It sucks. You have to make it clear to your spotter. You apparently cant just say dont touch the bar unless it completely stops.

It really pisses me off to see somebody’s hands going up in down around the bar when I’m benching. The spotter just needs to step away (DO NOT DROP SWEAT ON MY FACE) and only help somebody if the bar has clearly stopped.

Has anyone spotted a very attractive girl in the squat?
I did not want this comment to get lost in the mess. I am certain, however, that if someone spotted a hot girl doing squats then they would start a new thread for it just to tell and/or show pictures.
I have never done it, and the only time I saw a hot girl squat, ever, was on a smith machine (if that counts).

And that’s great, until you miss completely and drop it before the spotter can do jack shit about it
This guy was under the smith machine on his back on the floor doing 1/4 leg presses with like 225 on there.
I kinda though this was a little duchey because there was 2 leg press machines and a power rack 5 feet away. Anyways I figured he would know how to give me a spot right.
So he was doing leg presses laying on the floor with a smith machine when he could use the leg press and you thought he knew what he was doing enough to spot you?
I dunno man… these things just don’t make sense.
I’m not getting on the spot argument here. But there used to be these vertical leg press machines when I was just starting out where the weight was pressed vertically upwards (instead of at an angle).
I would imagine using the smith for leg presses would be much better for the glutes and hams than using the 45 degrees sled, and you wouldn;t even need as much ROM on the movement.
