Reznor is considered a genius because NIN is probably one of the most commercially successful industrial bands out there. Reznor himself writes pretty much all the music as well. They were one of the only bands to ever record a LIVE music video, twice.
As far as getting into industrial, Ministry’s The Land of Rape and Honey is all your really need.
chris: excellent post with skinny puppy. that’s classic.
this is a great one imo: Dioxyde rexming Aslan Faction’s song Soul Obstruction:
other bands worth trying out: aslan faction, davantage, feindflug, navicon torture technologies, side 3, weapon’s grade, the retrosic, etc.

Yeah, the further back you go with Industrial, the harder it is to listen to, because when it started off it was meant to sound as abrasive as possible, the goal not being any kind of musical entertainment. All you have to do is listen to Throbbing Gristle to know what I’m talking about.

Now, this is the first I’ve heard of these guys. I just went and listened to a bunch of their stuff. Interesting!

Can’t stand without a minute without music, so I listen to it a lot, but I never quite understood industrial musicians as Trent Reznor for example. I mean, he has been called genious all over the internet. I also never unedrstood the multiple genres of music they use.
And yes, I know that to some it may be not only stupid question, but ignorant too, that I was this close to makeing a new account to post this, but that would be helluva trollin’.[/quote]
Your user name answers the question posed by the thread title.
“What’s Industrial music all about?”
“Who cares?”
Nobody has mentioned Stabbing Westward?
While there was a lot of crying going on, they were one of the true industrial groups (until their last album) and Darkest Days was arguably one of the best albums to come out of that genre, in that time-period.
