What's In a Name?

does this include black people to or just directed at whites? Anyway i dont see anything wrong with being proud that i am white im not trying to be racist or throw anything in anybody’s face. Its not being arrogant just confident b/c we should all be proud of who we are

Prof X: i agree w/ that totally. Its just that modern white people are supposed to feel apologetic towards the horrible injustices that we have put on blacks in the past. That is supposed to keep us from being proud of the many accomplishments that i have previously posted on. I refuse to not feel proud for being white.

Who has asked you to not feel proud of being white? There is a huge difference between a group of people who had everything about them stripped away attempting to regain that…and a group of people who have always been in the sucessful majority in this country loudly proclaiming “pride” just for everyone to see. Do you not see a difference? I think, in time, none of this will be necessary at all.

Yeah i see a difference but it doesnt matter b/c success walks the talk. No matter what culture besides even in Africa blacks haven’t accomplished all that much since the ancient egyptians. So its not isolated just in the Americas.

I am going to go with the thought that you just wrote what you did because you are severely misinformed about world issues. Africa, for lack of a better term, has been raped. It has been ravaged by every super power country in one way or another and left for dead. There are areas of Africa where the people are richer than you and drive better cars. However, the continent is largely in its current state because of everyone else wishing to take advantage of it…not because africans are so lazy or uncivilized. Pick up a history book in your free time. Learn where diamonds come from in large amounts. Learn how a race of people was taken advantage of.

You spoke of success. List for me 10 inventions off the top of your head that blacks in this country created. 5? 3?

You wish this were actually the case.

It wasn’t a rebuttal - it was a question. What does the label ‘African-American’ have to do with whether or not people pre-conceive you?

Presumably you don’t want to be pre-conceived based on your race, but adopting that label isn’t getting you any closer to a day when that happens. It doesn’t help that cause.

In fact, isn’t it arguable that the opposite occurs, that you continually reinforce a racial label yourself when you don’t want others to?

The label keeps reminding people of your race. I thought you wanted to end that behavior. Hence the question about why the label?.

Allow me to point out what you are clearly ignorant of. Our names were stolen. I doubt most blacks in this country whose families were brought here in the past through slavery (in spite of cultural mixing) could trace their families back more than 4 or 5 generations. After slavery, blacks were still degraded due to their skin color. The names we have been given in the past to describe us as a group has changed over the decades.

Up until the late 60’s or even early 70’s, they called us “Colored”. There were “white” water fountains and water fountains for “colored people”. My mother still remembers seeing this when she was growing up so it wasn’t so many generations ago. Beginning in the 70’s to a large degree, our title became “Black”. This was largely misused in social references also as a sense of degradation. The black community searched for another title that would describe a sense of history and dignity. To this point, through the 90’s, it became “African American”. Again, this was an attempt to acknowledge our past as well as usher in dignity behind who we are. This is slowly changing again to “Black” as the predominant title simply because the influx of cultures has left most in this country far from the original genes that saw our ancestors stumble off of slave ships.

You see, our title has changed over the years for no other reason than the open use of racism by other cultures surrounding us, and the attempt to initiate pride that was taken from an entire race and continually stripped for decades after. The original question was, “what is in a name?”. The answer to that is, the exact same thing that is your history, your culture, your ancestors and everything else that makes you who you are. The name hasn’t changed because blacks in this country have tried to be separate. It has changed because we were treated as separate and unequal…as less than human. The name was an attempt to regain what was taken…and it has slowly changed as society changes.

Yes, you do wish I was as unintelligent as you say. This would look so much better for you if it were true.
[/quote]

This is exactly what I am talking about. This is the answer I was looking for. It is a good answer - perhaps debatable - but a good answer.

I asked a legitimate question. You give me a legitimate answer, a conversation develops.

oh and Harris has pointed out actual reasons why i shouldnt be proud of my culture , Ghost also said that nobody should really make statements of pride about their own culture because it differentiates one person from another.

Its ruled by dictators, has famines horrible wars won by machetes and hutus killing and raping their brothers. Look at Europe, people like visiting there , its a civilized place if you dont count the recent terrorism. I do agree that blacks have accomplished less in America but that is from our country’s horrible racial practices of slavery and jim crow.

However i did like that one about the open heart surgury - thats quite a feat!

Less in America? Are you serious? And there are actually people on this board…in this country, that don’t understand why there is a need for information to be spread about the accomplishments of blacks in this country? Your children think we haven’t done anything. They think Africa has been ripped apart…because Africans weren’t doing anything. I think we should all applaud our education system.

Here are some more for you, lumbernac…because we haven’t accomplished all that much:

Frederick M. Jones, air conditioning unit-July 12, 1949

Benjamin Banneker, almanac-Approx 1791

Granville T. Woods, auto cut-off switch-January 1, 1839

G. Cook, auto fishing devise-May 30, 1899

Richard Spikes, automatic gear shift-February 28, 1932

W.H. Richardson, baby buggy-June 18, 1899

L.R. Johnson, bicycle frame-October 10, 1899

A.P. Ashbourne, biscuit cutter-November 30, 1875

Charles Drew, blood plasma bag-Approx. 1945

Henry T. Sampson, cellular phone-July 6, 1971

G. T. Sampson, clothes dryer-June 6, 1862

S. R. Scratton, curtain rod-November 30, 1889

Lewis Latimer, electric lampbulb-March 21, 1882

T. Marshall, fire extinguisher-October 26, 1872

L. A. Burr, lawn mower-May 19, 1889

And my personal favorite,
George Washington Carver, peanut butter- 1896

Yes, the reason you are enjoying Peanut Butter Grow! bars right now is because of…one of those people who hasn’t accomplished all that much.

There are many more…but how is it someone in the year 2005 could look back on history and claim that “blacks haven’t accomplished all that much”? In fact, considering what we were up against, who has accomplished much more?

Africa hasn’t accomplished much in the past century for one reason and one reason alone, shithead: what white people did to it. Period.

Y’know what else white people invented? Grammar and punctuation. It kind of undercuts your “we’re much much better than you” argument when the white guy writes like a retard and the black guy (who’s a medical doctor, I seem to recall) gets Strunk and White’s approval.

So, really: knock off the white power bullshit, please.

Yes my grammar does blow. In high scool i had the bad attitude that anything not involving math or science or business was a complete waste of time. In one of my college english classes however i did get the best grade in the class for writing but i had to hire an english student to edit my papers. Apparantly grammar is a much needed self-improvement project.

Anyway we can list accomplishments by race all day long but in the end, blacks in america and africa and everywhere else for that matter have accomplished less than whites. I dont know why or how white people are still holding back people in africa but hopefully we will stop b/c blacks are indeed making a mess of the place. Have any of you heard about the trouble in dafur lately w/ all of the ethnic cleansing and rape? We haven’t been holding them back for a long time now but the Africans still refuse to normalize their civilizations.

What the hell are you thinking? it is people like you, with your line of thinking that drove the wars on the Indians. “What did they accomplish?” Obviously nothing in your ignorant eye, but just as our money hungry system makes sense to us, their tribal system makes sense to them. Who the fuck are you to distinguish between what is an accomplishment and how people live their lives? Do you think that they look at us and say, “Wow, I wish I was in the rat race everday! Accomplishing something!”

If they invented ways to mass murder each other like we have, if they made the atom bomb, would you call that an accomplishment? Go back to the backwoods with this idiotic outlook.

Ghandi said it best, when asked by a reporter, “What do you think of western civilization?” . He replied, “I think it would be a good idea”.

You need an education. You need to read history books, and take third grade spelling over.

I can’t even believe you are going here with this. I keep reading your replies and getting more irritated by the minute. It is people like you that are here only to dig holes and reproduce. Although I sincerely hope you don’t.

Reproduce, I mean.

Look your taking things a bit too far. Where did i say that hurting, exploiting or otherwise doing harm to any other people was justified? Accomplishments or not. This thead was about feeling pride in yourself to me anyway. If Ghandi doesnt feel pride in my culture then that is fine.

BTW the British occupation of India has done it a world of good. Now that a lot of them can speak English they are the world’s back office and call-center. For a geographic area where they should be horribly horribly poor this does give them a decent job. Besides war is just a product of civilization at least the caucasian’s form of war we try to outright vanquish our enemy and then be done with it. In Africa your children will be macheted and if they are less than 3 they may not get raped.

So Ghandi should have thankd the british for their occupation instead of slandering them. Not very nice of ol Ghandi.

Regardless of you trying to insult me the facts remain. Africa is a poor country charecterized by revolutions, dictatorial regimes, and developing economies. History books will pretty much say the same thing that i have about africa dude.
