What Would You Suggest for Insomnia?

Got it - thanks!

Yea careful with that stuff. I used it for a while far less than most guys online do and still suffered enough of a withdrawal to make me uncomfortable and keep me away from using it anymore.

Tolerance forms too. My ex (and I warned her as I don’t wish anything bad upon her) started taking it in small doses and said it fixed her panic attacks. Weeks later she was still reporting panic attacks. Maybe less, who knows. Baclofen is very similar and a lot of people prescribed it (I once was) report depression after a few months.

All in all just not a perfect solution.

My wife has been battling some anxiety and depression and visits a counselor occasionally. She has learned that her sleep sucks because of the anxiety. There is a physical response in the body and it causes her legs to move and that wakes her up. I don’t know all of the science but I bet @EmilyQ can help.

It was recommended that she try a weighted blanket. I got her one for Christmas and quickly became a believer. I used hers to take a nap and sleep in after a weird blip in my work schedule. I haven’t slept that hard…ever. I ordered my own and it came in yesterday. I slept like a rock last night.

I think it could help you guys, too. The internet told me to buy one that’s 10% of my weight plus a couple pounds.

I’ll wear my Fitbit to bed tonight to track my sleep. I know it’s probably not too accurate but it’s the only measurement I have. Last time I wore it to bed it said I got like 6 or 16 minutes of deep sleep. I’ll see if the blanket officially changes that.

Less serotonin (carbs) and more dopamine (beef, Dark chocolate) during the day and more serotonin less dopamine for dinner. Not surprised that someone up there reported sleep improvements on buckwheat only dinners

I’d be making sure that stress is under control (that includes training stress ie. train less) & body fat/weight is on the low side before resorting to all sorts of band aids, ā€œnaturalā€ or not. I’ve seen too many fat guys using CPAPs instead of, you know, dropping 30+ pounds to begin with

I’ll look forward to hearing your results.

You’d think I would be helpful in this arena, but I dunno. I can spout all the usual sleep hygiene and write down your worries/gratitudes/dreams and meditate and no screens/exercise/caffeine/whatthefuckever after whenthefuckever, but I struggle with insomnia, too, and have not gotten it figured out, nor have I had much success with clients except for the idea that one or two poor nights of sleep will not impair your following day, which reduces anxiety around the insomnia itself and can help prevent it spiraling.

Anxiety and insomnia are both energy. They’re the downside of personal traits that have upsides, too. I try to bear in mind that these are the price I pay for having above-average stores of energy to use in positive ways.

I’ve had a handful of clients recently mention the blankets and have started looking at it for myself, so again, will look forward to hearing back about your experience.

Well, here are the results. I sure feel better. The downside is that it’s so damn cozy that I don’t want t get out of bed.

Okay, brand and other relevant info, please!

Has anyone had any luck with just taking glycine before bed? I’ve always had issues staying asleep. I can fall asleep just fine. Z 12 has worked awesome but I’ve realized if I take it every day for too long I get serious mood swings and when I stop for a bit there are a couple days of withdrawals where I feel like I’m getting sick so I’d like to eliminate that altogether. I’m going to try 3g of glycine, possibly with some 5hpt.

Do you find this blanket to be hot? I do not sleep well if hot. Also, is this a blanket you put on top of a comforter, or is it a comforter? I would like a king size weighted blanket, but not sure what the cost of that would be?

I got mine on Amazon. There are hundreds so I picked one with a 4+ star review and over 3500 reviews. Mine is a queen size that’s 25 lbs and it cost $67.91. Here’s mine and the one I bought my wife (the company that makes hers didn’t have a 25 lb option).

@mnben87, I’m just using it as a stand alone blanket. You can buy covers for them. I think you can use it over your sheet like a comforter. Getting overheated is a top concern for buyers did there are companies that address that with cooling features. I haven’t found myself to be hot yet.

I wanted to give you an update on my weighted blanket. I’ve been sleeping great with that thing. It prevents me from moving around during the night so I actually stay asleep and get rest. I feel better in the mornings than I ever have in my life. :+1:

Oh! I kept meaning to mention but kept forgetting, I got one! But I live in a cold place and when I added it to the rest of the blankets (like the non-negotiable fleecy/sherpa-y electric blanket) as well as the velcro-like flannel sheets, it was way too heavy and I felt trapped. So I put it away to await warmer weather.

It sounds like you’ve created your own weighted setup.
