People in my gym don’t know how HVAC works. It’s a hot day, the staff turn the air conditioning on but for some reason all the windows are open. Bah.
Who’s gonna break out the rubber suit first?
Put me in the crowd that would take the home gym instead of the membership. Thankfully, I already have a pretty good setup at home. I wish I had a little more space, a few more pieces of equipment and higher ceilings. But, as important as training is to me, if I ever had to go to a gym again I would quit.
I am blessed that I am able to motivate myself to train at home. I would not have the motivation to deal with the things with which I used to deal at the various gyms where I’ve been a member. There are times where it would be nice to have a lifting partner to bs with and push me, but I can SBD just fine without a spotter and I would eventually just want the dude to go away so I could lift in rage-fueled peace.
Membership!
• Seeing how other people train sometimes gives me ideas.
• Where else would I be able to flirt with 70+ year olds?
• The front desk kid holds me accountable for stretching and warming up.
• If you tweak something during a big lift, you can isolate other muscles on a gazillion different machines.
• It’s kinda fun to show off. My pull-up game is decent right now.
• It’s kinda fun to embarrass yourself too. Last week I got hit in the head by a metal cable attachment and nearly passed out.
• Gym people can become long-term friends. We have quite a few of those now!
I would always pick gym membership. Where I am a little odd, I like supporting my gym. I refuse discounts. I wish all members felt like I do. Treat the gym like you want it to thrive. I believe all members should have their share of “skin in the game.”
If I had the best equipped house gym I would have a tough time getting motivated to do anything. Get me around some people who want to lift some weight and I thrive.
If the home gym means a bigger house or garage to put it in then I will take it, if the home gym means one of the cars has to go outside then Nope I will take the membership please.
I guess it also depends on the quality of the gym you are giving me membership to. I’d happily train at my current gym for free but there are some gyms I would rather not train at
