What Supplements Do People Like These Days?

i trust my magnesium and creatine. I feel them.

But for the vitamins and omega i would like to know what is really absorbed…

Whey, ZMA, fish oil, baby aspirin are staples.
I take blood pressure meds and a statin like most big, old guys.

I don’t trust many “formulas”. I do my research on Pubmed and Google Scholar and maske my own “formulas”. If it’d botanicals, I use standardized products. I try to use those that are G.M.P certified. I vbuy bulk when I can, anf then I try to buy from companies that use 3rd party lab testing. I’ve been at this for about 30 years and when I stick with it, I get good results Good luck with your program.

so what you take ?

Well, I would say that my sport probably doesn’t have the level of competition/popularity that his does (hard to know), but in my sport/weight class (lightweight strongman), that is essentially the level I compete at. At my best I’ve been a top 5 competitor in the world.

My training load is different because my sport is different, but I would guess that my training often involves higher intensity and lower volume than his does over the course of a week. Strongman events are also in the 2 minutes or less range, so that part is similar.

I’m curious what supplements he says he found to be important for him? Do you remember?

are you sleeping 7-9 hours every night ?

Late to this thread, but beyond the usual “lifter stack” of protein, creatine, glucosamine, and fish oil I recently stumbled across a drink that includes: melatonin, gaba, 5-htp, chamomile, and magnesium. Not sure which of the ingredients is the money one or if it’s the combo, but this thing knocks me out within 20 minutes of finishing the can. I’m talking deep, restful sleep for the rest of the night.

I don’t have an issue falling alseep, and since getting a new mattress my sleep quality is much better, but if I need a bed time boost this really answers the mail. Not a Biotest product so haven’t included the brand.

So I’m shifting towards placebo on this one.

I ran out of fish oil last week so I haven’t been taking it. Have not noticed a difference in recovery or joint pain even though volume and intensity have gone up

I’ve felt for a long time that the benefits of fish oil are probably more just as a general contributor to good health than anything you’ll actually ‘feel’, per se. So I wouldn’t go so far as to say that it’s a truly a placebo supplement, but I do think it’s overrated as a joint-specific supplement.

So for awhile I was taking different prescription things to sleep. Relatively strong stuff. And I was dealing with a crazy sleep hangover every morning. The products were knocking me out, but it was just too much. About a week ago, I started taking a low dose of melatonin, and it’s been exactly what I was looking for. I’m out in 30 minutes, and no hangover in the morning. I’m waking up when I’m supposed to, lol.

Switching from generic fish-oil to Flameout had me observing a reduction in daily joint pain. But that’s the only time I observed anything to that effect.

interesting. I’ve never tried flameout. I’m shockingly not dealing with any joint pain right now, but the next time it flares up I may give it a shot.

Yeah, I figured it was all the same, but it really seems quality. Same with the ElitePro minerals. I use melatonin as well, and with the minerals my sleep QUALITY is really solid these days. Quantity is still on the light side, but the sleep I get is very deep and restorative.

I think I’m still going to take 1 serving (2 capsules)/ day for blood thinning properties. THere’s a family history of ischemic stroke on my dad’s side and I have arrythmia, which apparently increases risk of clotting

My fish consumption is pretty much non-existant these days due to cost

I’m pretty out of the supplement game. Preworkout when I need it and I use protein powder when I’m dropping weight. That’s about it. Electrolytes if you want to count them.

It’s funny, those used to be absolute staples for me. I’ve consumed so much protein powder in my life, and for a few years, I wouldn’t go to the gym without a STRONG preworkout. Now I don’t use preworkouts at all (other than like a monster or red bull or something), and I don’t use protein powders at all outside of the gym. I don’t know if Plazma really counts as a protein powder, I think of it differently. But yea, I’ve got bags of metabolic drive sitting around that I probably bought 2+ years ago. I’ve used the metabolic drive on occasion for a couple meal replacements when I’m in the middle of a water cut and I need something that will go through me quickly, while avoiding sodium/carbs.

I am extremely jealous of ppl who are efficient caffiene metabolizers.

I LOVE the taste of coffee and would love to try energy drink flavours, but can’t really enjoy either

actually, on the note of supplements - the FDA recinded their ban on DMAA a few years ago. For those that don’t know, DMAA was the magic sauce to the orignal Jack3d formula. It is a Nootropic in the amphetamine family (don’t let that term scare you, it’s not what you think) which effectively makes it a “focus/smart drug”.
I found a supplement about a year ago that had DMAA, caffeine and some other stuff, but it feels like taking a light-weight Adderall. If you can find something with just DMAA, then i think the max doseage is 100mg.

The stuff is pretty good honestly, would highly recommend but not for anyone sensitive to stimulants.

the old jack3d was what I used the most, when I used preworkouts. I remember I bought like 10 containers of it when it was banned, I happened to find a fire sale on it at like a vitamin shoppe or something.

I tend to just overheat with most preworkouts now. It really stopped working for me when I switched to strongman from more ‘regular’ gym stuff. Particularly since I’m in Texas. When it’s 100 degrees outside, and I’m training strongman events in an open-air gym with no A/C… probably best to avoid excessive stimulants, lol.

Yeah, wouldn’t recommend stims for strongman type stuff - great way to pass out and catch a silver bullet in the behind.
