What Made PE Fun?

Loved floor hockey.

Hated field hockey (They don’t make left handed field hockey sticks).

Thanks everyone, i agree with alot of the things you have posted that make PE fun.

I liked dodgeball as well, cant really think of too many games that involve alot of the goals that you want to achieve in PE in other games and still be alot of fun.

I also agree that competition, even if it is just with yourself is a good thing to stress in PE.

The other thing i noticed is variety is important as well, not everyone likes the same thing, so making sure to do a variety of activities is important.

Try telling Vinnie Jones that soccer is gay. I’d pay to see that.

H_r - yes, I try to include variety for my girls. One thing that pissed me off in school was that it was team game-centric and always about ball games. We only got to run if the weather was too bad for hockey. Being a dyspraxic only child, I did very poorly, and the trouble with team games is that you don’t get individual coaching to help you improve.

I try to include some drills before we start any games so that all the girls get a chance to work on their individual skills. I also get them doing gymnastics in winter which is more individual-focussed. I actually got one not very well coordinated girl to do a forward roll and she got so enthusiastic she started going to a gymnastics class outside of school. Stuff like that is nice to see.

Soccer in school is not gay at all.

It seems to start getting silly when we see the World Cup and guys are diving and crying, looking for a referee to eject an opposing team member.
It just boils the blood of so many of us because it seems like such a sneaky, underhanded thing to do.[/quote]

Indeed.

I can kind of understand a lot of people not being big on watching the big tournaments (due to some of the ridiculous incidents which can sometimes mar the occassion), though, playing soccer at grass-roots level can be pretty amazing though! Great times.

If a kid at my school had of tried doing a ‘Christiano Ronaldo’ we’d have either just laughed at him or punched the silly fool in the head << I can’t help but think a lot of people when they diss soccer don’t really realize this.

The drive to be the best goalkeeper on school and get select for the best team in competition.

I hated PE with a passion. As the 250lbs fat kid, i sucked at a football (soccer), hockey, basketball, pretty much anything that involved any co ordination.

Although i was the fat kid, at the time i was carrying a lot of muscle as i started lifting from a young age i just ate like an animal.

Then came Rugby… my time to shine! As everyone else in class weighed around 100lbs, (we were around 12/13 at the time)

I pretty much dominated, normally taking around 5 guys to get me to the ground. I was practically a human battering ram. my god i loved Rugby.

All the guys who used to mock me and bully me (i was pretty shy in school) go what they deserved. Should barges, clotheslines, pretty much everything i saw on WWE Raw the night before.

I was the lanky kid without any skills in any games, so I hated it. I was good at chinups, standing broad jump, and distance running, but could not play any ball sports. It wasn’t until the end of high school right before I started lifting that I was actually much better at catching than I thought I was. I got quite good at ultimate frisbee, ended up pulling 3 plates, and ran a mile in under 6 minutes. Unfortunately, I took PE as a 120lb/5’8" freshman.

dodgeball

i was a tall, fat, slow and uncoordinated yet I still seemed to be one of the better kids at sport even though I was generally chosen last, fat kid stigma I guess.

Jokes on them since I’m in better shape than the entire year level now.

I had a hot weight lifting teacher who could out squat the guys on our football team. Even though her thighs were bigger than my waist she was hot as hell.

Back in my day we were allowed to play “Smear the Queer” and what a game that was… took some real balls to pick that damn ball up after someone gave it up after being dog piled… we would sometimes stand around that damn ball for minutes goading one another to go ahead and pick it up… funny, the girls never participated.

I hated PE as a kid. I had one crappy teacher after another. And it really pisses me off to look back at some of the stuff that they made us do. This, oddly enough, is why I’m halfway through a Masters program for Health and Physical Education.

There was one single week in my entire school career when I looked forward to PE. It was the week that they took all the girls to the weight room and taught us about lifting.

I could rant all day about bad PE programs vs. good ones, but I think creating a positive learning environment and allowing students to experience a variety of physical activities: team sports, fitness, games, outdoor activities, etc. are two of the most important things.

I had a gym teacher that made us learn square dancing…I think it was his idea of making us all look like fools at once instead of doing a normal activity where only the slow and fat kids were ridiculed.

The thing that sucked about PE was that it gave me a very negative view of phsyical exercise. It took me until midway through my sophmore year in high school to chose to jog and lift some weights on my own. It wasn’t until my freshman year of college that I began to train by choice and LOVE IT.

I have to wonder, if I didn’t have the memory of my chubby body trying to force out a 9 minute mile in front of an entire class, would I still fear jogging at some level?
Or maybe it was good for me. Who is to say.

Either way, PE should NOT be taken out of school. It should just be made…better. Somehow. Have Mr. Thibaudeau teach a 3rd grade class?

Thanks everyone

@jaseHxC, i understand, but dance is one of the things that is part of the curriculum in most schools. So it has to be covered most of the time. Even though i am a terrible dancer, i have to admit it can be fun with the right attitude and environment.

@ buckeye girl, good for you, i started weight training in junior high and i also loved it when i got to go to the weight room. I certainly didn’t see very many gals try or look forward to weights as you did. So that is pretty cool. I also agree about having a good variety of different things and a positive environment. Nothing sucks worse than dreading going to class because you know the teacher is not very positive.

@marzouk, that is me exactly. I was pudgy round and fat up until about 5-6th grade and i started playing football. I was terribly shy and etc, but a coach helped me find my mean streak that i show in my lifting videos at times.

The girls used to wear boxers as shorts.

I’m a PE teacher. My first job was in elementary school. I thought I wouldn’t like the little kids and transfer to high school when an opening came up, but it has been 10 years now, I’m still in the same school, and I love it. I have 1st-6th graders, and 99% of the kids are excited to be there, at least from what I see.

And you better believe we still play dodgeball. The kids love it. If the school district banned dodgeball, the kids might riot. We have about 5 or 6 different versions we play. Of course we do a ton of different activities, but dodgeball is without a doubt their favorite.

I totally hated p.e, the p.e teacher in fact school full stop.

Me and my best mate used to bunk off every friday afternoon (double p.e) for a whole year and nobody but nobody noticed.

Actually spent most of school years bored out of my head, couldn’t wait to leave and start a real life.

Thanks for your comments, i’ve got to admit that i’m starting to feel the same way. I have mostly been around the highschool area, and the leval of apathy is pretty high. With the younger kids it does seem to be just like you have experienced, in that most of the kids seem to actually look forward to coming to PE.

I loved PE. The best part was laughing at the kids who couldn’t perform a pull up.

Kidding aside, we used to play capture the flag (random note: I accidentally spelled it “capture the fag” just now) in a big park with hills, a small stream, pond, and forested areas. I used to be able to escape the older, faster kids by running through the pond/stream because they were too wussy to get their feet wet. But for the most part we used the stream/pond that ran through the park as the boundary between the two sides.
