What Languages Do You Speak?

I assume the majority of people here are from the US and other notoriously monoglot-heavy English-speaking countries, but I’m interested to see what level of language diversity we have here.

Where are you from and what languages do you speak?

I’m British and speak enough Spanish to get by living in Spain (viví en españa hace siete años; yo trabajó en Gibraltar - pero he olvidado la mayoría de mi español ahora).

Enough Irish to read a children’s book (rinne mé aréir é - labhraíonn mo chailín Gaeilge agus caithfidh mé freisin).

Oh, and I also speak enough Chinese to point at the picture on a menu in a Beijing restaurant and say “that one” to order it and then thank them when it arrives… which is another way of saying I know two words in Mandarin. But useful ones!

I’m also not bad at English, as it goes.

Just one, Aussie. Even than I butcher it on a regular basis.

Although sometimes I bring out “Como estas?” when I see a particularly fine latina.

Really poor English. So, about half a language. I do occasionally have to translate for my wife in Mississippi and Alabama though.

I’m from the US, so I speak English. I studied Latin to a ridiculous level in college, so I can understand the majority of Spanish and Italian, and a bit of French by reading and listening.

Does Polynesian Pidgin count? haha

Mandarin and a couple of Chinese dialects.

Damn, you must have some good translation software for posting.

Hey! I speak Czech too… And English. I can cuss in a lot of tongues.

I’ll have an order of ‘Fuck to fry the cow river’ with a side of ‘Fuck to burn of’. Thank you.

Do you live in the Czech city?

No, been many times, though. I have a ton of family their from all over, Melnik, Brno, Kromeriz, Praha, etc. I didn’t speak English until I was 5. We spoke czech at home all the time. Now its a mix, czech-lish.
It’s a second home to me. I could easily live there. My American family, not so much.

Ok… However, it’s delightful when here is also someone else who knows Czech.

Do you live there?
