What Do You Do for a Living?

Field Service Engineer for scanning electron microscopes. The hours are weird because I sometimes have “home office” days where I get paid for doing nothing, but then the next day I have to drop whatever I’m doing and fly across the country for a week. I have a home gym, so if things are stable, I can train whenever, but my diet sucks because I work in lots of labs that don’t allow any food or drink whatsoever, and I can’t keep it in my car because I have to be escorted wherever I go. A big bonus is working on most Big-10 college campuses in warm months.

Any one have something really tiny they want to see? I was thinking about taking some Biotest powders in to a lab and shooting some pictures just for giggles.

Last job was as an electron microscopist for Air Force Research Labs, then going backwards it was waiter/student, retail at a london fog outlet store, bicycle/swingset assembler for toys r us, pizza maker, ATM refurbisher.

engineering or finance… I was trying to figure out why that was but have no good theory yet…

The finance is something I have always wondered about, every coach I have ever had was either a math teacher or in finance.

as for the engineering, who knows…

I am a Physical therapist that works in a hospital doing both inpatient and outpatient. Luckily we have a wellness center that has a power rack, bench and york power bar. We also have a full cicuit of machine, two types of pulley systems. I have brought in for my training a full set of bands, mini and regular, 4 5/8 chains, 2 1/2 chains, 1-4 boards for pressing

Department Manager for Lowe’s. I’m not surprised to see that I’m one of only a few people working full time retail posting. The schedule is impossible to predict. I work at 6 AM tomorrow, and until 11 PM the next day. The hours suck, the pay is lousy, most of the people I work with are high school dropouts/GED educated and to top it all off, the customers are some of the most irritating people I’ve encountered in my life.

Not a single day goes by that some asshole with too much free time gives me a hard time because he’s managed to mangle his house so badly it’s close to beyond repair. The senior management in the store are blind to what’s actually happening both in the store and out, and couldn’t be bothered to look. I actually heard a 20 minute long lecture from the Ops Mgr. because I was 7 minutes late coming back from my lunch, literally. Never mind that it’s the first time in 8 months.

I’ve been in this worthless industry for 6 years and I can say without a single moments pause that big box retail jobs are the worst possible option for anyone, whether as a student or someone looking for a career. The hours are horrifying. Most stores are only closed for Thanksgiving and Christmas. This past year I worked New Years Day, Easter, Memorial Day, July 4th, and Christmas Eve. Not short hours, either. I did not go home on Christmas Eve until 11PM.

I could vent on and on for hours, but the bottom line is, if you work in retail, take a good look at your life and see just how many of your problems, mentally, physically and financially could be solved by getting out.

My husband feels your pain, he has your exact job right now, with Lowe’s even. He’s been there for less than year, took the job as a temporary thing because he got laid off. The hours SUCK. It’s almost impossible to plan ahead. The people are MORONS for the most part. I don’t know how you’ve done it 6 years, it’s a wonder you’re not insane.[/quote]

Just think, without you guys doing the donkey workLowe’s would not have been able to expand into Canada to take on Home Depot & pay Gene Hackman for his wondrous voice-overs…

Engineering/Finance = Good salary

Sports consultant and gaming adviser for online sports books and casinos.

I train in the morning and have all the gym for myself pretty sweet.

AR

i drive a truck for my dads company…sounds exciting doesnt it!
i train at night after work.

I worked fulltime as a tech writer for two years, then hit pay dirt with the first novel of a five book young adult series. I still write tech part-time because I don’t want to lose the industry connections should the next novel flop on its face (and I just like it).

Talk about freedom of working, my boss emails me a topic, says something like “can you finish this by X date?”, I say yeah, write it whenever I feel like it, rinse and repeat.

I’m sitting in an awesome tiny trailer in a Utah KOA right now. Just finished a 25 page mini-manual on Unix I’ve spent the last nine hours writing. Now I’m going to write the next chapter of my book, take a nap, and spend the rest of the week hiking through the incredible breath-taking landscape of Utah.

So, if you’re in Utah and you see a 22-year-old woman sitting in a cafe with a tiny white laptop and DSLR, feel free to come over and say ‘hi’.

Federal Agent. Diplomatic Security Service. Google it. Its great except when we have unannounced travel. Supervisor: What are you doing tomorrow?
Me: Taking the wife out for her birthday.
Supervisor: Not anymore, your going to (insert shitty country here) for 30 days. Go home and pack.
Me: Sweet, looks like the wife is getting a better present than last year!

Other than that, which doesn’t happen often (just at the worst possible time) greatest job ever.
Plus we are authorized to work out during work time. So being in the office 11-12 hours a day, if we are in an office, isn’t so bad.

Navy supply officer. Currently on shore duty with a squadron so I get to train during lunch and afternoons. We just put together a small gym right next to our hangar and there’s a bigger gym on the main base with a pool and climbing wall.

are u in a band??

No. I play classical guitar. I teach, do weddings, private performances, and get paid to study guitar in a graduate (masters) music program.

Very nice. I’m a fan of classical guitar and studied it seriously for a while. Tillman Hoppstock and Roland Dyens are my two favorites. I also think Ana Vidovic is the sexiest woman alive. Trying to make a living playing guitar my self but lost all my paid gigs. I’m finishing up a bachelors in guitar performance. Will probably do cruz ship gigs when I graduate.

I’ve wanted to try the cruise ship thing too.

I’ve done 2 contracts for Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines as a sound engineer. Contracts are anywhere from 3 - 9 months. I think 3 for musicians. It’s great for single individuals just out of school. All your meals and room is included, plus beer is cheap and there’s plenty of hot European women everywhere.

As a musician, you’ll literally work an hour per day and spend the rest of the time on the islands/sleeping/whatever. Your paid a salary so, not sure how much for musicians though.

There’s gyms for the guests and even a private gym for the crew, although the crew gyms aren’t the best. Ours didn’t have a squat rack, but the guest gyms are loaded with equipment and you are free to use them.

How do so many of you make a living by being a students? Back when I was in school, I had to pay them.

Patent attorney. Truly a life of exhilaration. Or not. I’m sure it’s one or the other.

Fairly flexible work schedule, which in turn means fairly flexible workout schedule.

patent attorney

i usually work out 2 to 3 days a week plus weekends. BUt when the workload gets heavy, i have to miss workouts and try to make up for it in my home gym.

i’m a shepherd

I wouldn’t really call it making a living.

For my undergrad I had summerjobs as well as working during college time. Also in Ireland there is no fees for Undergraduate degrees so that definitely helped.

For my masters I had to pay fees :frowning: But luckily got a scholarship and I’ve been getting by all right along with the money I saved as an undergrad (since I lived like a hobo).

For my next journey in education I will finally be getting paid  My PhD will be fully funded with a minimum wage type stipend.
