Soooo…
Capitalism has lead to a society where even the poor can become fat with well tasting food, but somehow that is not ok either.
Pray tell, when will it be ok for you?

Oh my, I couldn’t pass this one up.

Gasp! Its almost like people act in predictable patterns when faced with particular circumstances (i.e. offering low cost, calorically dense, nutritionally vapid, good tasting “food” results in obesity).
But its “just willpower”, right? Do the countries where Western diets are introduced suddenly plump up because they (completely coincidently) happen to “lose responsibility” at the same time?
Examine phaethon’s statement carefully. Scrutinize it.
Ok, hyperbole aside, are you really taking the case that obesity is not largely caused by external forces?

Well it is. Over eating is a well known coping measure.
And armed rebellion is a well known coping measure when feeling overtaxed.
I guess this too would be alright then, yes?
I don’t think it is ok to be obese.

The gist is correct. Obviously, I wouldn’t word it quite that way. I was quoting thunderbolt, and I didn’t see the need to rephrase it just because he made it sound outlandish.
pushharder wrote:
“Evildoers?” Folks are gittin’ fat cuz of “evildoers?” They are “victims?”
Yeah. Quite often they are. They will eat to cope with a shitty domestic situation. Or a shitty work environment. Maybe the boss is being a complete asshole. Maybe their partner cheated on them. Maybe they were sexually abused. Or maybe they were just having a hard time keeping their shit together. So they eat too much.
What is so complicated about it?

What’s complicated is that you’re offering an explanation, and Push and Orion are confusing an explanation with an excuse.
Basically, you say “People are obese due to X,Y, and Z” and they read “Its ok for people to be obese, because it’s not their fault, its the fault of X,Y, and Z.”
Yeah, the reading comprehension here in PWI ain’t so good.

WTF? You quoted Thunderbolt? Copy and paste that quote for me, please.
Yes. However, thunderbolt was saying that it was not the case. In replying to him though I did not see the need to reword it.
thunderbolt23 wrote:
No, it’s not. It’s mainly caused by a lifestyle focused on overconsumption and being sedentary in both work and entertainment. Our overweight culture - predicated on simple overindulgence - isn’t a result of being “victimized” by external forces and evildoers in the fast food industry.

100 years ago when obesity was not epidemic were there no asshole bosses? Or cheating partners? Or sexual abuse? Or hard times keeping shit together?

Food was not as cheap.
Work was generally more active.
And more importantly:

I was quoting T-bolt. I quoted his comments on the issue and then replied using the same language he was using. Hence the use of evildoer etc.

High fructose corn syrup dealers ?
Don’t know how they managed to not become a target of the war on drugs.

No, you replied with different language.
He said, “Our overweight culture - predicated on simple overindulgence - isn’t a result of being “victimized” by external forces and evildoers in the fast food industry.”
You said, “Obesity is often a result of being victimized by external forces and evildoers.”
Your statement is not a quote of his. Your statement is 180 degrees of his. That means you were NOT quoting him.
I was quoting him. And then in my reply I disagreed but kept the same language he was using.

I have removed the “in the fast food industry” because you are spot on. However, obesity is often a result of being victimized by external forces and evildoers.
Bold: Me quoting him.
Italics: My reply using the same language.

So that begs the question…should these dealers be arrested and incarcerated? After all, “all that is necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing.”
No.
When drugs are mostly produced by national/local industries (alcohol, tobacco, HFCS, etc) and consumed by the average joe, it’s obviously the consumers’s fault. It’s sad, but people just lack the willpower.
When drugs are mostly produced by foreign industries (cocaine, opiates, etc) and consumed by misfits, it’s obviously the dealers’s fault. The product itself is evil.
