indeed

Not to thread jack into a soccer discussion… But I wonder what our national team would look like if we took every skill position player currently in the nfl, and college; went back in time, only let them play soccer, and developed their soccer skills the same as their football skills. Luckily for the rest of the world, we dont care about soccer…

I can’t even think like that. Forcing kids to play soccer when there are other, real sports otherwise available to them would be akin to a human-rights violation.

That was awfully close to being a country wide riot, but Neymar prevails.

Brazil struggled and made it through, they play Colombia next who looked pretty impressive.

question for those more knowledgeable than I: This seems to be a high scoring WC; average of just over 3 goals per game, the highest since 1958. To what do you attribute that?

This WC seems to be faster than previous ones, faster transitions with younger and better talent around the net.

Football tactics and play evolve and change over time, and at this time in history attacking and a more direct style of play is in fashion. This makes it good for the spectator.

I think the whole country of Uruguay is in denial about Suarez.

Seriously, that asshole attempted to tell the world that he lost his balance and fell into his shoulder with his teeth. That’s delusional to the point of having real concern for his mental health. So glad theyre out, and the story will hopefully go away.

Mexico plays the Netherlands in an hour, the police are already on tactical alert here LOL.

Wow, tough loss for Mexico. Their goalkeeper is incredible.

That was heart-breaking.

There are a number of reasons, foremost is the evolving of tactics from a possession based football(tiki taka) to a more direct form of football(counterattack and its different shades). Another reason is the lack of respect for the traditional football powerhouse, which means smaller teams will try to attack more, therefore more goals will come.

Another reason is the long season in europe. It means that European teams were tired coming into the tournament,if they weren’t,I think there would have been better defenses and limited goal scoring, for example if teams like england, italy, spain, portugal etc qualified to the second round, there would have been less goals. Finally this world cup has a lot of young faster players, especially attackers which means that they will be willing to take on risk, and take on the defense more regularly.

A lot of foreign players play in the European leagues and some of the European teams are doing quite well (Netherlands, France, Germany). The European teams you mentioned just got beaten (some of them badly). Complaining about a long European season sounds like a weak excuse.

Arjen Robben for those who missed it

I felt awful for Mexico yesterday. I really though they had it won. Was actually sitting in a Mexican restaurant watching it. Was a rather entertaining experience.

Mexico was tough to watch, as was Greece.

Germany better pick it up after half-time today.

You would notice that for a lot of players who were playing in many cups until the end of the season case in point players from real madrid, athletico madrid, barcelona, even the top teams in england have been having a poor worldcup, with many of them having fitness issues(messi and benzema are the exception here) however messi already had an injury earlier on in the season, which gave him ample time to recuperate, and benzema was regularly substituted for real madrid.
