What Are You Reading?

If anyone is looking for something good and entertaining to read, I would suggest the hilarious Discworld novels by Terry Pratchett.

Some of these novels are generally included on lists of the funniest books ever written. Almost all of them have high Goodreads ratings between 4-4.5 (out of 5) from thousands of readers. Humour is subjective, of course. You would probably enjoy these if you think some of Monty Python’s stuff is funny or enjoy stand-up comedy; and like light sci fi or fantasy. (These are not my favourites, but I like these). They’ve sold over a hundred million copies in 37 languages. These novels can be read in any order.

In Canada, these new books sell for about twenty dollars each. For the next three days, you can buy almost the complete digital set of 39 novels at Humble Bundle (.com) for a minimum donation of $16, some of which supports charities. An almost $800 value; verify this yourself on Amazon Kindle. These digital books run on IPhones with a free Kobo app, or on various other readers for different devices. I like good books but have no affiliation with the above, though recently bought them myself.

If you are not convinced, you might try reading Good Omens as an acid test of whether you would enjoy these other great light-hearted novels.

@meastlake1 I saw this and thought of you. April 7 have you pre-ordered?

HAHA! I forgot one little item from my mom’s birthday book gift box….She is so awesome…There was a little gift slip of paper inside which read “Thought you might enjoy Sandford’s newest Davenport adventure, I’ve preordered/paid for this and you will receive it when it’s released!”

Honesty moment – I actually didn’t see that note initially in my excitement for the gift box, it got discharged in the trash. Later, when I had called to thank my mom profusely, she asked if I got a little note about yet another gift that would arrive in April. I said no, I probably threw all the box and wrapping paper away. She said “If the trash hasn’t gone out yet, go take a look” WHen I asked her to tell me, she said nope, you have to find it. LOL, then I found it and of course was really pumped. Man, I’m sure it’s sad and all but a birthday gift box like the one she sent me, one of the best gifts ever! I loved it, and she was so happy. I told her it was so great because she actually put a lot of thought into what she got for me, you know? Not like “oh, happy birthday, I got you a watch. Or, happy birthday I got you an Amazon gift card [but yeah, those are awesome]” Gifts that are really tailor made toward YOU, which you can tell involved some modicum of thought, are always the best, and I told her that. I think it made her day.

But yeah @ChickenLittle , thanks for thinking of me and telling me. If I had NOT received that for my bday, I would have been very grateful that you alerted me. I had no idea he had a new one coming out. Sadly, I don’t know how many more he can write as Davenport is getting up there in age, and it sort of gets unbelievable when you have a BCA agent kicking ass and he’s like 60+ years old. I haven’t given his daughter Letty, her series, a try…I dunno, just doesn’t seem to be the same. Like I’ve said, I read all the Virgil Flowers book and while they were good, it was only because I enjoy Sandford’s writing style…Virgil is just too laid back and…..nice.

Excellent. What a great birthday present!

It doesn’t bother me at all. Over the years they start to wotk smarter not harder  it’s all those years of experience.

Eh, maybe….but, perhaps the author could have made him age “slower” in his novels? Of course, with Davenport having kids, that makes it a bit more difficult I guess. How long can he describe Letty, or the twins, as being little kids? But, hey, look at the Simpsons! They never age.

I just finished “Pendergast: the beginning” and it was really good. Not great, but it was still enjoyable. I’d have to say, his Diogenesis trilogy (Brimstone, etc…3 books in total) & his Dr. Leng Trilogy (Cabinent of curiosities, Dr. Leng, Angel of Vengeance) were probably my favorites.

I was feeling pretty bummed out about having finished all of the Pendergast series………..and then I REMEMBERED, I had 1 unread Pendergast novel! Right when I got into this series, I had purchased “The Relic” and “Reliquary”. For whatever reason, I forgot to read Reliquary! So, I’m currently reading that, and THEN I will be done. But I still have “Riptide”, “Absolute Power”, The Russian-James Patterson, and then Oil & The Jungle….so I’ve got a nice workload in front of me, which should keep me busy for a bit.

Then next month I get the new Sandford book “Revenge Prey”, so, I’m not AS bummed I guess about being finished with the Pendergast Series.

HEY! @BethB !!! Don’t think I forgot about you…what’s the deal with your prey series novels? Making any progress? I’d like to hear which ones you’ve finished & what you are currently working on

Had several books on hold for weeks. A bunch came in all at once.

Two of them were DNF. Idaho Fall, Trust No One by James Rollins which is a shame because I LOVE the Sigma Force series but between the narrator and the storyline I just couldn’t.

Prey by Michael Crichton was long winded but pretty interesting.

Denied Access was meh.

Anti Hero book 11 of the Orphan X series was good. Not THE best Orphan X novel but acceptable. I do like me some Evan Smoak but the trope about the “feelings” is getting old.

I have made absolutely no progress on any books. Lol. I’ve been having a bit of a rough go of things in my personal life and I just can’t seem to get into any books at the moment. I think maybe something funny is in order until I’m feeling a bit better mentally. But I really do enjoy the series. As soon as I’m back to myself I’ll dive back in.

I hope you know that I’m always just messing with you in good fun. I completely understand…stuff/life, etc. gets in the way and understandably reading a book kinda gets knocked off the list. I hope you get to feeling better, and I agree with you, watching something funny often can help. Take care of yourself and I hope you get to feeling better soon.

I always enjoy interacting with you. You remain one of my vary favorite posters. Although I do feel like quite the slacker when I see the amount of books that you and @ChickenLittle burn through! I’m kind of jealous. I used to burn through two or three a week myself.

Started Eyes of Prey tonight. This one feels extra gruesome. Lol. Hopefully this won’t take more than a week.

Hooray!!! I just read the summary to remind me and it’s a great book, definitely will keep you turning the pages. Glad to see you after it again, it’ll help you to relax and be calm. Well, I guess minus the action in the book, which is quite gripping.

I’m still plodding along in Riptide. It’s still by Preston & Child but without FBI special agent Pendergast, so I’m kind of deflated. I’m still giving it a try, just feel kinda “meh” about it.

I’m hoping it will help to provide a much needed escape from my own brain. It’s a scary place to hang out these days. I hope your book improves. Hopefully it will end up knocking your socks off!

Yeah, it’s funny, sometimes reading a book can make me escape from what’s going on upstairs in the ol cranium…BUT sometimes it doesn’t work and you can read the same page 5 times and yet not remember a word of what you just read, and reread, etc. Weird stupid brains.

SO, I just made the big dumb mistake of watching a movie, made based upon a book, because, well, my damn curiosity got the better of me. I was like “ok, maybe, just maybe, this is the one time where the movie is AT LEAST as good as the book”, right? BIG MISTAKE!

I (don’t laugh, I know it was dumb to do) rented for $3.99 on Xfinity the movie “Relic”….which is based upon the Preston & Child book, actually the first book in the series which introduces us to FBI Agent Pendergast. Holy lord it was awful! The casting blew ass, the story was missing so many pieces it didn’t even make sense, there was no Pendergast[that really pissed me off], it was just a real piece of shit…..that I paid $4 for too. Naturally I had to watch the whole thing, as I was complaining throughout the whole movie and my wife in the other room kept yelling “why don’t you just turn it off then?!” to which I obviously said “No way, I paid $3.99 for this lump of shit, I’m gonna see it through to the end!” LOL

SO, never, EVER watch that movie, EVER! If you are clicking through the channels and see it, stay the F away from it! You’ll never get that time back, I’m still angry about wasting 93 minutes of my life on that garbage. I know, I know, what did I expect?

That was how I felt about Queen of the Damned. It was absolutely horrible. It was like 20 years ago and I still get pissed off just thinking about it. I was super excited because I loved The Interview with the Vampire so much. (Granted I watched that movie before I read the book). But I felt like they really got the feel of the book even if they changed details. QOTD was just awful. Casting was shit. They destroyed the storyline. It had the feel of a Blade movie. Just terrible all around.

I agree 100% with you on that movie, just god-awful! But hey! What’s this about a Blade movie? I happen to like the Blade movies, and I really like Wesley Snipes as well. Are they cheesy and ridiculous? Yes, but it’s good action, and, well, it’s got vampires! Just like I also like Van Helsing…it was dumb but still entertaining. Eh, maybe I just have a thing for those kinds of movies. I also liked the Underworld series too…Lycans AND vampires, how great is that?

I should have clarified. I too am a fan of Blade. I just meant that those movies are more comic book feeling and action and rave music movies. The Vampire Chronicles are supposed to have a gothic feel. I loved the first Underworld. The second was ok. They lost me after that.

Lol, I agree, they did tend to go downhill after the first…especially that really bad one where Beckinsale wasn’t even in the movie. I think in general it is VERY rare when the 2nd, 3rd, etc movie in a series is as good, or even better than, the first. Only select few franchises have achieved it, and we all know what they are…e.g. Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, etc.

Oh I loved the Lord of the Rings!!!

I think one of my favorite series in movies and books was Harry Potter. With the exception of the 4th movie, I thought they did a really good job. I read the whole series as they came out. I don’t typically have the patience for that kind of thing. I usually only read a completed series.

Meh, I am one of the only rare human beings alive apparently who neither read the books OR saw the movies…..little kids as wizards, spells, fighting evil monsters, etc BUT without any blood, gore, etc….nah, never held any interest for me. At least with LOTR, you had the scary looking, nasty Orcs which were pretty cool. The action was great, the scenery was magnificent, great story, etc. But I don’t think I was missing much with Harry Potter, so no big loss.

Of course, I have a Shudder subscription so I get all sorts of twisted, scary horror movies and it’s fantastic! If you like that sort of stuff, $9/month is a pretty good deal, and you get horror movies from all these other countries also. Naturally, my wife cannot stand horror movies and sometimes she’ll walk by the living room and she’ll glance at the TV screen just as someone’s internal organs are being ripped out, then eaten, and she just shakes her head and goes “what the hell is wrong with you?” To which I just say “this is awesome, look how realistic the guts are!” She suspects I just might have severely impaired cognitive function…and that I’m potentially a psychopath, lol. Man, Shudder is great!
