What Are You Reading?

Alan Moore’s run on Saga of the Swamp Thing. It’s the best comic I’ve ever read. My admiration of Neil Gaiman’s Sandman work has been dramatically diminished now that I know how much he’s just been trying to be Alan Moore.

I read a lot of books about nutrition. I like Jason Fung and Gary Taubes.

I’m currently reading Ultra Processed People by Chris Van Tulleken. I recommend it highly. It quotes a lot of studies I was unaware of. And it is extremely well written.

Finished Ultra Processed People. You should read it.

It does not seem particularly easy to write an entertaining, funny and information packed book about food additives, agribusiness, junk food, food processing and the complicated associated science and its impact. But Van Tulleken did it.

Along the way, he points out the history and flaws in using the degree of processing to stratify food. He persuasively shows the American government does very little (often zero) testing before food additives appear in food. And that the effect of many of these things is essentially unknown and sometimes scary.

He talks knowledgeably about the gut microbiome and the little we know about it. He shows how little control you have over your appetite and many issues around hunger. But it is not a preachy book, and does not say how you should eat.

He also discusses awesome stories, like that of Clara Davis. She was a paediatrician a hundred years ago who did an amazing experiment where she persuaded many mothers to bring their babies to a food lab for over two years, where the babies fed themselves as much as they wanted from a specific platter of 34 foods and a salt shaker. Amazingly, the babies essentially made healthy choices. But who gives up their babies for years to a food lab?

He talks about a lot of amazing psychology and food experiments. It’s eye opening stuff, and lifters already interested in nutrition would enjoy it.

I liked that one too. So far, I haven’t met a TJR book I didn’t like! The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo and Daisy Jones and The Six are probably my two favorites. Definitely check them out if you haven’t already!

What did you think of this one? For me, it was just okay. I liked Long Bright River a lot more.

A lighthearted bedtime story, to read to your kids

Daisy Jones was a great read! Liz Moore - Long Bright River is her best so far, but I enjoyed The God Of The Woods too. I thought Heft was so-so though.

This made him quite wealthy. If I am not mistaken, and I often am, he bought the Eagle’s Nest with the money he made. Of the world leaders at the time, apparently Uncle Joe was the only one to read it.

I mean, it definitely wasn’t bad - it just seemed longer than it needed to be. Give it a go and let me know what you think!

Just finished Red Rising, Golden Son, and Morning Star by Pierce Brown. Red rising is fairly young adult but the last 2 were more mature. I’m not a huge sci fi person but I now l love this series and plan on finishing the last few books

I’m reading The Poisonwood Bible after falling in love with Demon Copperhead. I’ve had it forever and picked it up a couple of times, but never could engage until now. I’m still not sure I love it, but it’s fine and I’ll finish.

I’m reading Apple in China right now. It’s an interesting account of how Apple was attracted to Taiwan and China by their low costs, but soon evolved to be able to tackle design challenges of stunning complexity. It is a good history of Apple, of the Chinese government priorities after Deng Xiaoping, and the international electronics industry. The idea you could build IPhones in America without an enormous cost increase is revealed as ludicrous. A good read, and a rare look at complicated subjects often hidden by hype and hubris. Goodreads a very high 4,55/5 score.
