I am a Cormac McCarthy fan. His writing is beautiful.
His storytelling, not so much.

Since I read for entertainment purposes, I find most of the content boring. Tens minutes of action then an hour or two of naval gazing.
I will give it chance when it comes around. I have felt the same way about certain books by authors I like, sometimes itās just a bad book.
I think Longmire is back on track after the inane supernatural stuff.
Iāve never listened (only read) to any ot them, but Robert Craisā Elvis Cole/Joe Pike series has a fairly recent book out.
Does your libraryās website have a feature where based on a book youāve selected, it shows you other books that are similar in type/style?
Tooth and Claw was pretty good!
Havenāt listened to any of his, I will check it out. Thanks!
No, neither one of my library accounts do that.
Picked up the 75th anniversary edition of Grapes of Wrath. Havenāt read it since high school and am sure it will have a much different meaning to me now.
I read it for the first time a few months ago. I think I had the choice of reading it in high school but chose something else. I wouldnāt have gotten nearly as much out of it then as I did now.
I feel like I remember you saying multiple times that there was a book you read in high school and then reread as an adult, and it was a totally different experience. I canāt remember what you were referring to thoughā¦ring any bells?
Two of those books come to mind:
The Things They Carried by Tim Oābrien (also Going After Cacciato -not a reread but if like one youāll like the other)
Heart of Darkness - Joseph Conrad. This is still one of my favorite books. It was too deep to really have an appreciation for it in HS (despite being in a higher level english course). Itās a short book that feels longer, a slow burn of anticipation and reflection on how othersā perceptions influence our feelings about someone before even meeting that person.
The Poliquin Principles by Charles Poliquin.
Also, The Colle System by George Koltanowski
And, a book on George B. McClellan by Stephen Sears.
Heart of Darkness! That was it. Iāve also never read that (and I donāt think it was ever mentioned in high school), but itās on my list of things I should read. That list gets longer and longer every year.
There are some books I feel go the opposite way. As an adult thereās no way to appreciate Into the Wild because Chris McCandles is so frustratingly naive and stupid, but as a kid you donāt see those flaws, and youāre left with a really touching story.
I feel the same way about Marcus Aurelius funnily enough. Isaac Asimov I feel is more special at that age as well
you can pick up a trade paperback of Heart of Darkness for around $5 typically these days. Itās been out so long. I think itās free on Apple Books.
Incoming rant:
I had such high hopes for this book. A Ghost of Caribou- Alice Henderson. Itās the 3rd book in this series. It starts off with a bang which is what I like. It was obvious by the first few minutes I needed to listen to the first two books to fully understand what was going on. Ugh!!!
I am not sure what was worse, the writing, the misinformation or the narrator. I knew going in this was going to be political/ climate change Etc⦠I get it, but Lord have mercy! How many times can you repeat the same thing over and over? For filler because she couldnāt think of anymore clichĆ©, ridiculous scenarios?
I listened to the other twoā¦
A Solitude of Wolverines and A blizzard of Polar Bears. After the first one it was sheer curiosity of how much bullshit you can cram in a book and still sell it. I hope she knows that when you say stupid shit like pigs being ruminant animals it makes the rest of the information totally UNBELIEVABLE. I thought you were supposed to research things? Where was the editor? (And yes, I went back three times to make sure I heard that part correctly.)
And, how hard is it the figure out how to pronounce words correctly? If she would have said āhelloā instead of helo one more time, especially in book two, I was going to stab my own eardrums out with an ice pick.
It was vegan wonder woman on a soapbox!
Apparently you need to eat nothing but black bean burritos and enegry bars to be this spectacular.
I have listened to a boat load of bad books but these are definitely on the top of the list. But, I did listen so I guess mission accomplished on her part. Think I will skip the next one coming out in March.
This made me LOL! I have listened to books where thereās one or two words or phrases I just canāt handle too, and youāre so spot on with that ice pick comment.
I hope you find a GOOD book with ZERO annoying word pronunciations soon!!!
this is a good book. I used it along with the judson book as more āreadableā references
My class in undergrad used dummit and foote, which was ⦠a beast
Alive: The Story of the Andes Survivors by Piers Paul Read - between this and news stories about plane crashes around the world, Iām prepping myself for survival mode when I fly next.
&
The Spinoza of Market Street and Other Stories by Isaac Bashevis Singer - interesting view into Jewish culture.
Iāve been doing jury duty (havenāt had to serve yet, just get called in every week to see if Iām picked) so I just grabbed two of the smallest books I could find on my shelf so they fit into my coat pocket and I could pull them out when I donāt need to be paying attention to anything.
Never forget an airplane is really just an aluminum can with engines attachedā¦
Thank youā¦
I might be flying across the Pacific later this year. Iāve only gone over the Atlantic before. Iām not actually scared of flying, but thatās a whoooooole lotta water.
True,
There are so many redundant systems on modern airliners and they actually glide pretty well if all engines give out (all of them are designed to fully function with one engine out anyway). Itās still the safest way to travel.
As a hopeless city-only inhabitant, I confess I had to grok āruminant animalsā lol.
My simple test is if an author or book canāt crack the 4.0 barrier on Goodreads, itās not gonna work for us folks who need to be entertained. I see she got 4.01 for Caribou but overall her ratings are low.
Well, being the hillbilly hick I am, I know pigs only have one stomach. Aināt never seen no pig chewing itās cud⦠lol
I didnāt see the Goodreads rating but all were 4+ stars on audible. ![]()
