What Are You Reading?

The books you read are a whole lot deeper than what I got going on. Lol! You definitely win!

Eh, if reading were truly mindless then I think more people would do it. All reading is good reading.

Have you read Normal People? I picked this up a few days ago.

Currently reading this. Had a great Q4 in the markets this year and don’t want to screw it up!

Agreed! Reading is the BEST!!

I haven’t read Normal People but have read Beautiful World, Where are You? (same author). It was okay, but not my fave. I’ve heard Normal People is better, so it’s on my list now!

Do you also find you have no time to watch televison or movies? Because I can count on one hand the number of films I watched in 2021…

I keep hearing good things about the book and movie, so I’m giving Normal People a shot.

Who needs TV and movies when there are so many darn books! And almost every time that I watch a show or movie based on a book I read - I am so disappointed. Books are just better!!

Let me know what you think of Normal People and if you tell me it’s good - I will get on it ASAP!

Oh yes. It frustrates me that there are too many books to read in one’s short lifetime. I can appreciate a good film once in a blue moon, but books are so much more enthralling and comforting.

Will do, I’m starting it tonight!

Holy crap!

I love reading but admittedly haven’t done much of it recently (I used to read dozens of books a year)

IDK why but I just can’t seem to really muster the mental energy to read books. I did read 150 papers over the course of last year though

I don’t actually watch TV or movies. I have them playing in the background while I do busy work

I’m like the complete opposite when it comes to books vs movies/tv

I have this theory that between books, movies, television shows, and music, most people gravitate toward only one or two of them. I am very much a book and music person. I without a doubt could not live without music. Books trail slightly behind it.

Television does not captivate me at all, and of the handful of movies I could recommend to anyone, I feel like my appreciation for them stems mostly from the cinematography.

It sounds elitist, which is not my intention because movies and shows are still cool, and people like different things, but I do think more people would enjoy books if it were not for America’s consumerist culture.

That is a good observation. I was music/books for a long time, then kind of dropped books for documentaries and nature programs.

I like a few series that are more story based, even though they fall into a formulaic rhythm of their own too.

All of the situational television shows are just straight crap.

A few YouTube channels that are skills and trades based have filled in some space there too.

I like TV and movies for shared time with my husband, books for when it’s just me or he’s occupied otherwise.

I lived alone without television, and only occasional movies, but subbed in the internet. I need books and music, but like tv and movies. Last on my list of worthwhile time sucks would be scrolling around skimming articles and watching quick vids. (Though music is not a time suck for me as it’s rarely an activity I engage in without my body being busy, e.g. driving, working out, cleaning, cooking.)

YouTube and podcasts are gray areas that do not fit well into my theory

I like words, so TV, podcasts, books

THe problem I have with music is that the lyrics are often centered around romance or generally negative emotions. I’ve been ā€œlisteningā€ to Russian music, but mostly to laught at the ridiculous music videos

I have to agree that most movies and TV are pretty crap IMO, but that doesn’t really matter bc most of the stuff I ā€œwatchā€ is played in the background as I do busy work (data cleaning, putting words on paper…). I’ve gone through 8 seasons of psych and 6 seasons of Monk and still don’t know who most of the ppl are.
I do pay attention to cooking shows for inspiration and learning. Those have been very useful

THis is where a majority of my media consumption comes from

I would be in a very bad way without books. I could cheerfully live my life without music. I like it but it’s a background thing for me. I enjoy movies and tv quite a bit.

Sounds like you haven’t dabbled in much music then. You don’t seem to like many things from which you cannot reap a direct economic benefit, so your comments don’t surprise me.

For me it’s not only about privately listening to music. Live shows are also a totally different dimension. I’ve seen some groups 5+ times, yet I don’t reread books often. Interviews with artists can engross me for hours, so that’s where YouTube most appeals to me. Music has helped me develop many of my closest friendships. I think I am straying too far off topic, so I’ll stop now.

Music can be emotionally dynamic, and you kind of have to let go of your own to experience it.

For me it evokes memories and feelings of other times, or it can be stimulating when I’m down. iIt’s like a surrogate of sorts.

Like, when I hear polka it brings back memories of my dad playing the accordion at holiday parties, or Led Zeppelin ā€œHouses of The Holyā€ reminds me of sunny summer evenings with my first true love.

Do you have any books you have reread? if so, why?
Are there any genres you dislike or avoid? Your reading list is very diverse

I sometimes reread non-fiction books as reference or reminders (ie Investing between the lines, Quiet, Nudge)

Fiction books are mostly one and done, except for One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich and A Tale of Two cities. I’ve reread both 7 times
