I found that my pupils where not directly effected to melatonin.
I have taken 3mg of melatonin and had somebody check the response of my pupils before, 30 min and 1 hr after ingestion. I found no difference. I did find through a yahoo search this…
"Mood changes have been reported, including giddiness and dysphoria (sadness). Psychotic symptoms have been reported, including hallucinations and paranoia, possibly due to overdose. Patients with underlying major depression or psychotic disorders taking melatonin should be monitored closely by a healthcare professional. "
So maybe that particular night my own melatonin levels where high and taking the additional 3mg caused me to overdose causing the paranoia feeling. I hadn’t done an extensive research on melatonin until now. The website that I’ve posted with this has a TON of info on melatonin. States what they are studying on and think it may benefit as well as sides, etc. you should check it out.

This bothered me a bit:
"Hormonal effects are reported, including decreases or increases in levels of luteinizing hormone, progesterone, estradiol, thyroid hormone (T4 and T3), growth hormone, prolactin, cortisol, oxytocin and vasopressin. Gynecomastia (increased breast size) has been reported in men, as well as decreased sperm count (both which resolved with cessation of melatonin). Decreased sperm motility has been reported in rats and humans. "

One time before a trip, my gf and I were packing the night before. It was starting to get late, and I wanted to make sure that we would be able to get to sleep as soon as we were done packing. So I took 2mg of melatonin, and gave her 1mg.
She wasn’t freaking out or anything, but she was absolutely miserable. She was suddenly groggy, and wanted to sleep, but wasn’t finished packing yet. This made her completely frustrated, and she had even more trouble sleeping than she would have without the melatonin.
I would never take it at any other time than right before bed. If you need to do anything requiring concentration, it’s a terrible idea.
And with all those implications it has on our hormone levels, that’s even less reason to take it.
I used to take it quite regularly (about 2 or 3 times a week) but have since moved on to 5-HTP. However, the more I learn about 5-HTP, the less I want to take that too. In fact, I stopped a couple weeks ago.
