Is there any metabolic benefits of working out( traditional bodybuilding training) first thing in the morning, without eating something before? I know the average meathead would cringe before this “heresy” and start talking about it being extremely catabolic yadayadayada. What would a T-man with a sound sense of judgement say? Obviously you would have enough glycogen left to perform a moderate volume workout in the morning.
I spent many years training at 0430 right out of bed and grew just fine bro. I work nights now or I would still be doing it. As a matter of fact I still do it on the weekends. Get up at 8, have a cup of java and off to the gym at 9. I feel like I get a better workout on an empty stomach. Someone will throw you the usual reasons not too, but I challenge them to show me any proven studies that prove their theory. If its working for ya, go with it. Peace.
Well, some used to say that GH or T was higher in the morning, but it’s not enough to make a difference for bodybuilding. Most people are very weak in the morning and I think it was Poliquin who said it takes a couple of hours for the body and nervous system to “wake up”. So morning is not ideal, especially on an empty stomach, but if it’s all the time you have, then go for it. If you have a choice, afternoon and evening is better for most people. I trained mornings for about a year and noticed slower progress, low strength levels, and nausia.
I am much stronger in the afternoon(after an 8 hour shift of cooking) than first thing in the morining. It takes a while for me to loosen up, and maybe the whole CNS “waking up”, has somehthing to do with it also.
Since starting my morning cardio Ive also started doing pushups, close grip pushups and chins first thing in the morning. Is there any metabolic i.e fat burning advantages, as with aerobic work, when working anaerobically on empty stomach?
I go workout at about 5:30 in the morning. I get up about quarter to 4, drink two large glasses of water, take a vitamin C, and munch a granola bar, then hit the road. It’s not as nice as going in the afternoon, but as long as I get to bed at a decent time; my workouts are good. I’ve made some good gains over the last 9 months.
I have been forced to train early in the morning (6-7am) due to team lifting sessions with a college sport, and also did it for a period of time due to work constraints. Like TEK, I noticed a good amount of nausea, and I also found my strength levels to be much lower first thing in the morning. I feel best when training at about 6pm when getting up around 7:30 or so (right in line with Poliquin’s 3rd and 11th hour recommendations).
since i worked with steve…i have to agree. strength was much better in the afternoon, but if you have to try and eat something. i tried eating and not eating and i felt much better when i had something to work with in me.
I am a ‘morning person’ and normally w/out starting at about 6am and have tried a few different things esp since I started training renegade style and find the following best (for me). Cofee and vitex approx 20-30 mins pre jump rope which I do at home, then I have about 3-4 mouthfuls of my ‘breakfast’ which is protein shake with oatmeal and fruit in. Drive to gym and do weights and GPP followed by rest of shake.
