It was my pleasure, thanks for asking about hiking! It’s one of my favorite activities. Feel free to ask as many questions as you want! I’ll reply to your post about the new shoes and such (good decision) in a little while.
Excellent!
That’s exactly what I’d bring, too. Type your destination + the word ‘weather’ into the Google search bar, and it’ll bring up the next ten days of weather and temperature forecasts.
Perfect.
My own take on desert hiking + cotton shirts - during a sweating-balls-hot day hike, a cotton shirt helps me stay cooler. However, if it’s raining, cool, and/or night, cotton can kill, hence the backup shirt.
Same here. I’m toying with the idea of doing a through-hike next summer, either here in the States or in Spain. If I can make it happen, I’ll definitely pare down my pack weight. Until then, thicc packs save lives!
@OTHSteve aint that the truth man. It truly is a one stop shop lol
I have and the range is so broad lol between the humidity and wind, I’m not versed enough to say “ok, I’ll need this” so I’m just bringing a wide range.
I’m bringing a mix of materials as well. I bought a fancy long sleeve UV short that’s super light weight and I’ll have a regular t shirt and a Patagonia pull over as well.
If this goes well I’d really like to start working up to camping and then more remote hikes and camping. I hate humans and I love a good view and nature. Seems like a shoe in
As for shoes, I had the lone something or other which is a small step up from these apparently, but they felt so wide and unstable. Got these and they seem good No idea what I’ll ultimately settle on
Same here. From advice to humor to information, this community offers a lot and is a mainstay in my life.
Ah, good! Not everyone thinks to check the weather before traveling. That broad range is exactly how it is out west. The typical summer day here in Albuquerque is 95*, but the average night temperature is 65*. A burning-hot day becomes a night cool enough for jeans and light jacket.
It sounds like you’re on top of the clothing situation I’ve never owned Patagonia gear, but I hear it’s excellent.
I think you’d enjoy camping and remote hikes. Camping and wilderness time are restorative for me, and I’m a relatively social person. What types of terrain and landscapes do you like most?
@TriednTrue and maybe @OTHSteve? Maybe you should go check out my emergency kit thread in the Combat section. See if there’s anything you guys would have to add! @ChickenLittle and I are hoping for some more fun discussion, haha.
Fit is critical. If these Altra fit your feet and feel good over the miles, I’d stick with them for maintained trail hiking. What do you have for socks? It’s wild, but some shoe-sock combos make my feet and legs feel like unstoppable machines.
REI is the best for outdoor shoes; their 12 months, guaranteed full refund policy is unbeatable.
Mountains. Desert or snow idc. I’m in Alabama so I want anything that remotely doesn’t remind me of this hell hole. Seems everything out west is where I want be be, regardless of season. I have zero desire to hike or camp out here lol
A pro tip on that. They sell return items in a garage sale section. It isn’t garage sale prices, but often 50% off. Last time I looked, they probably had 2-4 pairs of hiking footwear that would fit me. Most of it is used once. When their new shoes are often in the $200 range, it makes sense to take a look.
I got a really nice gregory 55 liter backpack that looked brand new for like $50 one time.
The REI I went to in Denver had an awesome selection of things in the garage sale area, this one local to me had maybe 10 things and they were really wild sizes.
Haha so true! Maybe it’s a case of not appreciating what you’ve always had… but alabama sucks. If it wasn’t for my kids I’d have already left. What I do for a living is needed and in demand on every inch of land people live. Maybe one day they’ll live with me and we can escape and chase the dream
Firstly I should say that I did not make or name the scale it was created after the video of this rep by other forum members. Here is a link to the post on my log, there is a IG vid link there
The discussion about grindy reps becoming a Simo and the the suggestion of a scale of PRS (perceived rate of simo’s) was discussed daghill log here - post 3350 - 3365
When you start using the Simo scale is when you ascend from manhood to godhood. A warrior of sweat and blood who submits heaps of iron to his indomitable will.
