Wanna be Elite...

Gosh buddy I really hope you caught it in an early stage. Nothing you can do but to stay optimistic, which from the sounds of it you are. I’m predicting you will get surgery, your hormonal issues will be resolved like you said, and you will be getting stronger at a faster rate than ever!

Hope all goes well buddy, and keep us updated.

Aww sweetie, sorry to hear that you got cancer. I second ashylarry, I hope it was caught early enough and everything will be resolved after the surgery.

I wish you a speedy recovery.

ashy/nikki: thanks for the well wishes…like i said before, im not sweating it…its gonna be all good…

11.3 - 3/21/11

OHP (531): 65, 75, 80 (8) <–These are in kilos…top set was 178
Facepulls (4x10): Some weight
Dips (40): 10, 8, 6, 4, 4, 4, 4

OHP felt pretty light and strong…dips were good on first set but i was completely exhausted for the ensuing sets…my work capacity is garbage!

I had the surgery today…including registration, pre-op, op, and recovery, I was in and out of the hospital in 3 hours…it was one of the easiest thing I’ve ever done…

Was able to walk to my car 2 blocks away post surgery with little issue, took a nap, and went out to eat with my folks and g/f this evening…some pain since it was a groin incision, and its getting stiffer, but right now I feel fine…still going to take it easy the rest of the week and let it heal up, but I’m not expecting a long recovery time…

I went and lifted last week a few times:

11.3 - Thursday 3/24/11
Squat (531): 325, 370, 410, 455x1 (w/ knee wraps), 500x1 (w/knee wraps)

Worked up to a 500 squat with knee wraps and it was very easy…I’m still getting used to the wraps and I’m pretty sure my strength is about the same with them as without them right now since they kind of throw me off balance and make me lose a bit of my tightness…

Didn’t do jack shit else this day except help my roommate with his power clean form…he’s new to lifting and I’ve got him on Starting Strength…

Sunday 3/27/11
Deadlift (singles): 225, 315, 365, 405, 455, 495 (missed without belt), 495x1 (made with belt), 545x0
Bench (singles): 135, 185, 225, 275, 315, 335, 355x0

Even though my strength has fallen off, I wanted the 545 that I’ve been chasing since last July since I know I won’t be training deadlift strong for a while…well, it is still eluding me…setbacks so far have included: back injury, finger injury, being too weak, and cancer…that mother fucker will soon fall though!

Blasted up 335 on bench and got 355 moving off my chest pretty fast but couldn’t lock it out…girlfriend told me my leg drive was much better than in the past, and I finally have some semblance of an arch, so thats encouraging…still disappointed in my bench but expecting it to shoot back up once I’m training with a full deck again…

Probably won’t be updating this for a month or so as I’m going to take the next couple weeks off then do some pussy workouts to ease back into it, which will not be log worthy…see ya guys in May…

Glad the surgery went well, man. That’s cool that you’ve got a girlfriend who supports your passion.

Also cool of you to find a buddy who wants to start lifting. Take it easy buddy, we’ll be ready for ya when you’re logging again.

Glad the surgery went well and wishing you a speedy recovery… That 545 deadlift is an elusive bastard. Take care man.

Who has two thumbs and goes to the gym 3 days after kicking cancer to the curb?

(BTW doing a google image search for “this guy” gets some pretty interesting hits…don’t say I didn’t warn you)

I’ve been walking a couple miles each day since Thursday to keep my groin from getting stiff…The extra movement will help me recover faster so I can get back to conditioning…

Well, walking is fucking boring, so Friday I decided to lift too…I didn’t go all Matt Kroc and squat 500 pounds 4 days after surgery, but I did do arms…Which is funny, because once I got to the gym I realized I had no idea how to “do arms”…

After thinking about it for a while, I did:

Close Grip Bench: 135x5, 185x5, 225x5, 275x5, 275x5, 315x1
Preacher Curl: 3x8 (who cares about weight)
Triceps pushdown: 3x8 (stack)
Cross chest DB Curl (that’s what its called right?): 3x8

It was a pretty easy session and I’ve decided doing arms is about as boring as walking on treadmills…

As for training, I’ve decided just to get back on 5-3-1…starting today…gonna take week 1 as a deload week just to get my confidence back up and get used to lifting a bit and see how the incision/groin respond, but nothing too taxing…

Going to stay at 3x per week this cycle with conditioning on my lifting days…

Non-lifting days will be 15-30 minutes of tissue/restorative work and mobility/stretching…

Yeah buddy…

Awesome! Lol at the Matt Kroc statement. That guy is not human

11.4 - Sunday 4/3/11

Squat (3x5): 185, 225, 275
Leg Press (3x10): 3pps, 3pps, 3pps
Lying hamstring curl (3x10): 110, 110, 110

PLP: 2

Got into the gym tonight to do some light work…paying for it now as it seemed to stress my incision a bit and its sore as fuck right now…the 275 set felt heavy, blarg…

Got mad cramps from the hamstring curlllzzzzz

What is PLP?

I thought it would be fun to do for 60 days and a good way to ease back into training, plus an awesome way to get my pullup totals up…if I lose some bodyfat doing it, awesome…

Since I can’t do 10 straight pullups (well, with good form anyway) I started at 1 per day, which was yesterday, so today was Day #2

Overhead Press tomorrow…

Nice… Back in the saddle again!

I think the high frequency thing works really well for pull-ups by the way. A long time ago (20 years ago) without any exercise knowledge I did something like this only with just push-ups and pull-ups and it worked nicely. I’ve done similar things for pull-ups more recently where I just did 30 per day and slowly reduced the number of sets (also worked well). Good luck with it.

Yeah i think you’re right man…i also like how I can break them out throughout the day, so if nothing else, I get some blood pumping at various times throughout…well once I get into double digits anyway haha

11.4 - Monday 4/4/11
OHP (3x5): 115, 115, 115
Various grip Pullups (30): 6, 6, 6, 6, 6
ME Dips (30): 8, 6, 6, 5, 5
PLP: 3

OHP felt light and easy, as it should…still having a bit of a hard time keeping tight in my core–I think part of that is cause it truly is injured from the incision, but partly just gunshy…the light weight building up should get me over the latter…

Pullups felt explosive and strong

Dips continue to be the bane of my existence…first set was easy–I only stopped at 8 cause I lost my balance and didn’t bother resetting my grip…but the latter sets were ME work…

Got in my 3 reps (lol) of pullups-lunges-pushups…Day 3 in the books…

Haven’t gone for my walk the past couple of days…will go for a longer one tomorrow on my off day to make up for it…

Wow great stuff in here. Glad to hear that your surgery went well. It’s great to see someone still lifting despite such setbacks. Pretty good evidence that there’s pretty much no excuse to not be lifting.

Aqua: Thanks for stopping in mate…I appreciate it…I think you’re right though that people make too many excuses–I’ve been very guilty of this in the past myself, but have been extremely motivated lately…

Tuesday - 4/5/11

PLP: 4

Good job on kicking cancer. Regarding dips, for along time I did lots of BW dips, but I never really got stronger on them. However, after a few weeks of doing weighted dips (working up to a top set after 2 or 3 warm up sets) I got a lot stronger on them. Might be worth a try if you´re struggling with them.

Hallik: thanks for the advice man, I will keep it in mind…I really think I’m just shitty at them cause I have never really done them cause they used to hurt my shoulder…they don’t appear to do that anymore so I’m happy about that…If I’m not getting any better at them in the next month or so, I’ll give weighted ones a try (ugh)…

Hey man - great log and crazy happy for you with the getting better. Prayers your way to stay healthy and stay in the gym.

11.4 - 4/6/11

Bench (3x5): 185, 185, 185
DB Rows (3x10): 60x2, 70x2, 80x2
Pulley Curls (4x8): Don’t remember weight

PLP: 5

I tried to do BB rows and once I got up to 185, it felt like my gut was about to bust open at the stitches…so looks like that movement is out for a while…DB rows didn’t bother it much at all so I will just do them…

Bench was light and easy, as it should be…

4/7/11

PLP: 6

11.4 - 4/8/11

Deadlift (3x5): 315, 315, 315
SSB Good Mornings (3x10): 135, 135, 135

PLP: 7

Conditioning: Tabatas Battle Ropes (15 on/15 off x 8–4 min total)

I was a little worried about deadlifting after the BB row fiasco on Wednesday since its pretty much the same movement putting pressure on my core, but these were fine…warmup sets were a little iffy but working sets felt mostly ok…I should be fine by next week on my 5’s week–proabbly will take it easy on the reps and then progress slowly on the 3s and 1 week…

Conditioning absolutely kicked my ass…felt good after it though…

Went and crushed Golden Corral buffet afterwards–shit was delicious…

4/9/11

PLP: 8

12.1 - 4/10/11

OHP (3x5): 125, 145, 165 (11)
Pullups (31): 7, 5, 5, 5, 5, 4

PLP: 9

Started off my 12th 5-3-1 cycle with a pretty good workout…the 165 felt very light in my hands and I was able to get it for a fairly easy 11. Did some pullups in between sets…

PLP tonight was the first time I wasn’t able to do the pullups in a straight set…didn’t help that I had done a bunch of them beforehand, but I can’t seem to do more than 8 at a time…oh well…

Funny thing is the PLP is starting to get to be a little bit of a conditioning circuit…by the time I’m up to 20, I’ll probably break it up to separate parts of the day and just make it a mini-workout in the morning and night (and in the afternoon too once I’m appraoching 60)…

Thanks man much appreciated…I don’t plan on missing gym time if I can help it…gotta stay sane somehow (or craazy? can’t remember which)…

12.1 - 4/11/11

Squat (3x5): 290, 330, 375 (8)
Lying Leg Curl (5x12): 80, 90, 80, 80, 80
Squat (5x10): 185, 185, 185, 185, 185

Holy fuck…hadn’t done the Boring But Big assistance in a while and this tore me apart…couldn’t walk Tuesday…started out light at 185 to build up the volume…

Forgot to do my PLP

4/12/11

PLP: 11

12.1 - 4/13/11

Bench (3x5): 200, 230, 260 (10)
DB Rows (5x10): 60, 60, 70, 80, 90
Bench (4x10): 175, 175, 175, 175

PLP: 12

Very frustrated with lifting…I looked back at my training log and the last time I was at 260 for AMRAP was in June 2010, and I got it for 11. I was disappointed then that I didn’t get 13 lol…now I’m stuck at 10, so I’ve effectively gotten weaker in the past year…fucking sucks…

PLPs or row or something is also starting to take its toll on my right elbow…I’m getting a lot of pain when doing these…my right shoulder is also a bit impinged…gonna go get some ART done on that arm here in the next few days maybe…
