While I agree with the OP I think the deterioration here is just a reflection of the deterioration everywhere. I remember my shock when I first started working with my current employer. The stress there is unbelievable. Management’s made up of people who just enjoy pushing people around (they would have been cops but where we work they’re a little less likely to get shot at) and everyone snitches on everyone else about the dumbest things. And these are adults, most over the age of 40. One can only imagine how they’ve raised their children to behave or how they themselves behave when they post on message boards.
When I first started on the job I was in a daze over all the stuff going on around me, it was so unusual. Ten years later, the disease has spread and it seems my workplace is no longer the exception regarding rude and nasty behavior. I know some here think I’m a nut about manners (I recall being called “mom”) but I think a lack of civility (along with an inability to accept other viewpoints) is a clue that our society is heading back to the dark ages. I know at times I’ve been guilty too, but I really wish we could all stop being so quick to react before considering whether we really want to contribute to the decline.
For what it’s worth, I recall when I started reading/posting back in 2005, there were similar discussions. Regulars would complain about the site catering to a wider range of people, a new wave of posters lacking insight, focus, manners or whatever. They’d dream about the ‘golden age’ when Goldberg, Patrizia and whoever else still posted and discussions were respectful and to the point. Ever since, in periodic intervals, the topic comes up and has lead among other things to the implementation of the T-Cell Alpha.
Due to time constraints I haven’t been posting as much as I used to in the last few months, but that is not the point. The way I see it, change is inevitable. Some changes may be for the better, others for the worse. I don’t see much use in complaining other than maybe suggestions how some technical aspects of the site can be improved, though.
This is an internet forum more or less accessible to everyone and this isn’t going to change. In a perfect world, these options wouldn’t be needed, but I guess it boils down to ignoring obnoxious posts or posters, arguing with them - in rare cases even changing their minds - or clowning them until they go away. Apart from that, while some of the drama and bickering may painful to read, some of it is great for comic release. SrJoker comes to mind as a recent example.
While I definitely consider this site more than a bunch of text by random, anonymous internet-personae, it bears questioning how seriously one should take arguments and insults by some person you will never meet in ‘real life’ and who is obviously just trying to get a rise out of you or the regulars as a whole.

FWIW, sometimes I think society’s decline is a perpetual or at least cyclical thing.
Back in high school a teacher read to us from this letter a man wrote to a friend complaining that his teenage son was rebelling and fucking up his life big-time. He went on to say that the way the majority of young people were acting these days, it would be a wonder if society didn’t collapse in the next few years.
Then came the shocker: the teacher revealed that the letter was by some ancient Roman, like Cicero or Marcus Aurelius!
On the other hand, the stupidity that used to be mostly confined to those under 20 does seem to be spreading to much older people… So there is cause for alarm.
