Walking 'Not Enough To Get Fit'

You don’t say!

“Getting sweaty may be the key.”

No way!!

For some people even the smallest step is a big step.

[sarcasm]But with all the walking I do from one room to another in my house, walking to my van EVERY DAY, then walking from a parking lot to get to work, man, all that walking should make me ripped, right?
[/sarcasm]

The sad thing is that some people actually think like this.

My mother blames everything in the world other than her own laziness and gluttony for why she’s pushing near 200lbs (AT A HEIGHT OF 4’10"!).

All the “running around” she does with watching the grandkids. She sits at the computer all day.

Some people will never learn, no matter how hard others try to help them.

Walking with a loaded Xvest is enough.

My entire training program is now shot.

trekking through the hills is enough…on a reduced calorie diet.

Sweet I can’t wait to do some extreme HIIT Walking !!!

Why are there so many stupid studies being conducted? You could raise the incline on that treadmill by 10% and it would change all of the findings they noted.

Yup.

But wouldn’t that be more difficult? Hard work does not sell. 5 minute abs sells.

Anyway, this study basically said to get any benefit you have to put forth some sort of effort. Who knew?

I don’t think this study is very valid. I know lots of skinny guys who don’t do any exercise and have that six pack girls like so much. Oh wait, maybe it’s because they eat 5 calories . . . . . naaaa that doesn’t make any sense, it’s cuz they don’t do exercise!

Calm down . . . . just a joke!

Yay, I go to the U of A.

So do I… and at the moment, I’m kinda pissed my massive tuition costs helped pay for this study…

So true. This is one of the silliest things I’ve read. When people talk about walking for exercise, its usually not on a level treadmill at a slow plodding pace. Most people walk briskly, and do it outside where there is potential for hills and so on. Compare the following two people:

  • Average Suburban American → get up, drive to work, sit at desk, drive home, eat, watch TV, sleep.

  • Urbanite living in, say San Francisco → walk to work, over numerous steep strenuous hills. Desk job, but walk to lunch, walk between buildings, sometimes briskly, to deliver documents and such. Walk home, again dealing with said hills. Walk to the grocery store to get food. Eat, TV, sleep.

You can’t tell me the second guy won’t be in better shape, have better fitness, and be healthier overall than the first guy (assuming diet is reasonable in both cases). This is true even if he never goes to the gym.

Ever notice there are way less fat people in concentrated urban areas (San Fran, New York, etc)? Its because, even with good mass transit, people in these cities have to walk a lot. Any study that suggests doing all that walking isn’t better than laying on the couch is full of it. At best, this study is limited only to its facts - walking on a treadmill that is flat at a slow pace doesn’t do much. Gee, thanks for the enlightening proposition!

Christine, you have given me an idea. 5 minute abs could work. Everyday, you get 5 minutes to eat anything you want. After that 5 minutes is over, you can only have water. For the more traditional people, you can eat for 2 minutes at breakfast, 1 at lunch and 2 at dinner.

Hey, it could work.
