Can anyone recommend a good multivitamin? I can’t find the “Whole Food Base” by Weider that Eric Serrano recommended. Super Nutrition is kind of spendy… what else?
Chris,I’ve been in and around athletics and the iron game for over 25 years. The best vitamin/mineral I’ve ever used is the one that I use now. It’s called Essentials by USANA. I’ve used many, many different vitamin/mineral combinations over the years and nothing comes close to these. E-mail me personnaly at [NOT ALLOWED ON FORUM- MOD] on how to get them. Don’t waste your money on an inferior product for something as important as a vitamin/mineral. You won’t be disapointed. Check out their website if you want. USANA.com
Isn’t USANA one of those multi-level marketing companies where the seller always tries to recruit the buyer? I’m not saying the quality is poor, but those testimonials from pyramid marketing companies always strike me as fishy.
Twinlab Daily One without iron - they make it in a one, two or three-a day format
Vitamin World has food based vitamins call “Green Source”
I use NutriLite brand. And yes, I’ll tell you right up front it is marketed by Quixtar, which is (by the strict legal definition) a multi-level marketing company. Check them out (the vitamins), they’re all plant based, organically grown, etc. You can buy them directly from their website (address as you’d expect), but you’ll need to get a customer number. You’ll need to contact the corporation to get in contact with a local distributor, but you don’t have to deal with them, you can deal with the corporation (and they won’t pressure you to sign up).
CHRIS forget everything everyone said go to gnc and get the mens vita pack or get universal animal pack
Doug, a few questions. Why do you suggest omitting the iron? And what do you think of these so-called sustained release tablets? Does this merely mean that the tablets are compressed to a greater extent? Are you aware that a British supplement company are manufacturing a multi-vit product that contains numerous tabs that are supposed to be taken at different times of day to prevent negative interaction between all the vits/mins? Does this idea have any merit, or is it overkill?
Occudyne is superb, look for it under eye care stuff.
iron is easily carcinogenic/toxic in men. It is extremely easy for men who eat meat and so forth to meet and exceed the RDA; exceeding it is not a good thing in this case
Twinlab Dualtabs are the best vitamins I’ve ever come across. They contain very high amounts of all the vitamins and minerals and lots of antioxidants. They are also very affordable. Great Value!!
BBSTu - sustained release is hogwash, marketing without scientific merit. Once a nutrient, especially a vitamin/mineral (except for sodium) passes the ileum, there is no more absorption, meaning that in the few hours it takes to get there, whatever is absorbed is it-so anything time released after that is a gift to the sewer system. As far as the British products, again it is marketing, as long as the nutrients are in relative safe dosages (see the Vitamin article that I did in a prior issue of T-mag), negative interactions will not occur. Studies do show that multiple small dosing imparts better overall absorption that a once-a-day approach.
I hope this helps!
BBStu - The reason for no iron is dual fold, one is that if you are not deficient in it, supplemental iron becomes constipating. Secondly, data is present that demonstrates an association between iron levels and heart disease, esp. in men, therefore, why take it?
Doug, I must apologise. After I had asked the question, I reread your vitamin article in which you talk about vit interaction. Interesting to hear about “sustained release” products. The brand I am using at the moment is supposed to be just this and it retails for about twice the price as the regular product. Needless to say, I’ll be switching brands. Thanks for the help.
Hey. GNC Ultra Mega Green is the best.

Doug: Is there a supplement you would recommend for women? Specifically, my girlfriend doesn’t eat enough (usually 2 meals a day, not enough calories), but I’ve convinced her to take a supplement and I want to make certain it will be as effective as possible. Thanks.
I think the vitamin reccomended by Dr Serrano is made from Chrysin.
I have another question based on this thread: Are chelated minerals a good or a bad thing in a supplement? I’ve been reading all sorts of contradictory stuff on the internet after doing a Google search (ionized v. non-charged, bioavailability, etc.), and I figured some of the posters on here might know.
For your girlfriend, it sounds like an issue of not getting enough overall nutrition, not just vitamins. For this, why not a lite MRP 2x/day, such as Lite by Me-Rx or MyoPlex Low Carb? As an aside, I would also sneak in a TwinLab DualTab as a cheap insurance pill.
Chelated, ionized, etc, marketing. The better absorbed vitamins and minerals are in the salt form period.
How can you tell or find out if you are deficient in Iron?
