It isn’t a matter of ratios, but rather, having suitable amounts of each.

I take 1000 IU’s Vit D + 150mg’s Calcium (35% RDA), twice daily. Does that seem like a reasonable ratio?
Noob amount of calcium imo.

Suggestions then? I thought getting 70% RDA from supplementation was reasonable.
EDIT: Just found out that the RDA is 1000mg’s for Male Adults. Honestly, the reason I was sticking to 300mg’s is because I was afraid of kidney stones (yea yea, but they sound horrible).
I don’t eat dairy and I do consume a high amount of protein, both of which I realize would suggest increasing my calcium supplementation. What would be an appropriate amount to get from supplements?
I like this little article. Recommends around 1400 mg/day for average bodybuilders. I typically get around 2 grams myself…
Edit: Mods apparently wouldn’t allow that link.

The Vitamin D intake might well be inadequate if you don’t get a pretty substantial amount of sun.
The calcium intake might be unnecessary depending on your diet. It would not be harmfully high in any likely instance. If not for example having a high calcium intake due to consuming substantial amounts of milk-derived protein, that amount of supplementation would likely be useful.

I do not eat dairy nor do I use any milk-derived proteins, so I’m thinking it would be beneficial to step it up to 3000 IU’s of Vitamin D and 450mg’s of Calcium. Sound reasonable?
Yes, though if you also don’t consume much in the way of calcium-containing vegetables, I’d take a gram per day of supplemental calcium. And if you don’t get a fair amount of sun, it could well take 5000 IU per day (there is individual variation though) for good 25-OH Vit D levels and it is unlikely that the dosage would be excessive.
What Bill recommends above is EXACTLY what my nuerologist recommends. We monitor my d level with a 25-oh hydroxy whatever test 4 times per year (due to some medical issues, primarily depression). To dial it in to optimal for my specific metabolism requires 10000iu per day, and yes i have many blood tests to prove it.
On top of that my doc has me take 1 gram of calcium daily among other things. The MOST IMPORTANT take home point is some will do well on 1000iu per day while otheres may require 10000iu or more…get the test its cheap and could change your life.

Agreed - my buddy tested recently and he was 11 on the 25 hydroxy test - yikes! He has auto-immune probs and needs to be 80+
I personally take 10k IU every morning with one day off a week.
Calcium tends to firm your stool. Just something to keep in mind if you start to get blocked up. (Magnesium loosens your stool, ftr).

WIN. No pun intended.

Is this an indication that you are taking to much, or just simply something that happens no matter what?

For the past 10 years I’ve had a problem with illness. As soon as one cold would disappear I would catch another only a couple of days later. I also suffered at one time from a low white blood cell count. Immune disfunction appears to run on my mother’s side of the family as she has similar problems.
However, I have been taking 5000 IU of Vitamin D3 for six months. During the course of this period I have as of yet to catch any sort of illness; the flu, a cold or otherwise. This is the first time in 10 years I have managed to go even two months without getting ill. Needless to say, this has become and will remain the most important supplement for me from this point forward.

That’s interesing, thanks for sharing. Since getting my D level above 50- I stay around 65 ng/ml- I’ve gotten far fewer illnesses. Do you know what your bolld level is?

At this point I’ve never had it tested. Nevertheless, given the empirical evidence in its favor, coupled with the scientific studies, for me Vitamin D is practically a “magic bullet,” if you will, in terms of immune protection.

I encourage everyone to get their level checked, vit D is basically a hormone and knowing where you are is supremely important. They even make take home tests now.
