So as we know vitamin C is a water soluble vitamin, there for it has the ability to be oxidized.
I have an acquaintance who does vitamin C research and she performed a little experiment.
She bought orange juice from the supermarket (half gallon) and over a weeks period she would pour some juice into a glass each day.
The vitamin C content would then be examined on a daily basis at the time of usage.
She noticed that every time she opened the orange juice and poured it into a glass the vitamin C content would diminish. By the end of the week there was little to no vitamin C left in the remaining orange juice.
I just thought this was interesting and wanted to share this info. So if you’re consuming orange juice for the vitamins, it’s better to purchase a juice pack and consume the entire thing.
Buying juice packs would be more costly and also much more wasteful, I don’t think anybody here is coming anywhere close to a vitamin C deficiency, so that should be the least of one’s worries.
But on a more serious note, that is quite astonishing that Vitamin C is oxidized that fast. Can your friend do a test on riboflavin and see how long it takes to be degraded when exposed to the sun?
There would be a misinterpretation though in that total Vitamin C species probably did not decrease: there was only conversion of ascorbate to dehydroascorbate, which is equally useful. Actually it is as the DHA form that Vitamin C enters the mitochondria, and is then reconverted to ascorbate; and most entry into cells is as the oxidized form, DHA.
So really the thing to do would be to test for total ascorbate + DHA.

Vitamins check under their beds for Bill Roberts before they go to bed.
interesting test… i will now be mindful of it, although i won’t worry about it due to Bill’s post and the fact that OJ is by far my favorite sugary substance.
